Abstract
Abstract An applicator (10) for the electrophoretic deposition of a medicament through or on a skin surface (18). The device (10) consists of layers (24,28) of a reservoir (24) containing the drug, a battery layer (28) superimposed on the reservoir (24), and a cover (12) of electrically conductive material fully enclosing the layers (24,28) and having a lip (16) along its periphery to engage the skin surface (18). An electrically conductive adhesive (36) bonds the lip (16) of the cover (12) to the skin (18).

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
187 words
An applicator for the electrophoretic migration of a medicament in ionic solution or suspension through the skin into the blood stream of a patient comprising reservoir means containing said medicament, battery means adjacent one side of said reservoir means with the side of said battery means facing said reservoir means having the same charge as the charge of the medicament ions in said solution or suspension, cover means of electrically conductive material partially enclosing said battery means and said reservoir means leaving the side of said reservoir means opposite that of said battery means exposed for contacting said skin, said cover means having a lip along the periphery of said applicator for making contact with said skin when mounted on said skin leaving said battery means and reservoir means fully enclosed, and electrically conductive adhesive material coating the underside of said lip whereby when said applicator is mounted on said skin a complete electrical circuit through said skin is formed and the ions of said medicament in said reservoir means migrate out of said reservoir means and through said skin into the blood stream of said patient.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
The applicator of claim I in which said reservoir means is made from a microporous material whereby said solution or suspension provides an electrical path therethrough.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
The applicator of claim 2 in which all components are conformable to the shape of said skin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
20 words
The applicator of claim 2 having means to maintain constant current flow during the period said medicament is being delivered.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
22 words
The applicator of claim 4 having means to terminate deposition of said medicament after a pre- tetermined quantity of medicament is delivered.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
15 words
The applicator of claim 5in which the last named means is a reverse plating cell.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
The applicator of claim 3 having a semi-permeable membrane within said cover means on the side of said reservoir means facing said skin.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
20 words
The applicator of claim 7 having means within said cover means for electrically insulating the latter from said reservoir means.
