Abstract

Abstract Lesions in human blood vessels may be removed with little or no thermal damage to vessel wall, and with reduced risk of accidental wall perforation, using a catheter which delivers laser energy in the 210 to 320 nanometer wavelength range. The laser energy is transmitted from source (4) through an elastomer.cfad high-purity silica optical fibre (5) positioned in a catheter sheath (7), and the sheath exhausts lesion destruction products. The source (4) includes two lasers, the first producing the energy in the 210 to 320 nanometer wavelength range, and the second laser producing energy into the visible range, the second laser being operated to remove remaining calcified portions of a lesion after the main organic part has been removed by the first laser.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 53 words
Laser catheter arranged to deliver laser energy through an optical fibre (5) in a catheter sheath member (7) to ablate in vivo a lesion (2) in a blood vessel, the sheath member being operable to exhaust the lesion destruction products, and said laser energy being in the 210 to 320 nanometer wavelength range,
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 53 words
Laser catheter arranged to deliver laser energy through an optical fibre (5) in a catheter sheath member (7) to ablate in vivo a lesion (2) in a blood vessel, the sheath member being operable to exhaust the lesion destruction products, and said laser energy being in the 210 to 320 nanometer wavelength range,
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
Laser catheter of claim 1 wherein said laser energy is initially selectable in said 210 to 320 nanometer range, and subsequently in an above 320 nanometer range.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
Laser catheter of claim 1 wherein the sheath member is operable to exhaust said lesion destruction products by fluid flow in said sheath member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
Laser catheter of any preceding claim in which said sheath member has a conformal lesion-contacting resilient portion (9) at its end.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
Laser catheter of claim 4 as dependant on claim 3 wherein said resilient portion has blood entry openings (10) therein.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
Laser catheter of claim 3 wherein said sheath member has a dividing wall (11) for two-way fluid flow for exhausting said lesion destruction products.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
Laser catheter of any preceding claim including optical fibre means (12) extending therethrough to aid in positioning the catheter relative to a said lesion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
Laser catheter of claim 2 including two lasers for providing said laser energy each of a wavelength in a respective said nanometer range.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 45 words
Use of a laser catheter for ablating in vivo in the presence of sodium chloride in solution, or saline solution, a lesion in a blood vessel of a human or animal body, said catheter including laser means operable in the 210 to 320nm wavelength range.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 45 words
Use of a laser catheter for ablating in vivo in the presence of sodium chloride in solution, or saline solution, a lesion in a blood vessel of a human or animal body, said catheter including laser means operable in the 210 to 320nm wavelength range.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 64 words
Use of a substance or composition for ablating in vivo in the presence of sodium chloride in solution, or saline solution, a lesion in a blood vessel of a human or animal body, said substance or composition being excitable to produce ultraviolet radiation of wavelength in the 210 to 320 nm range and of sufficient energy fluence for causing ablative photodecomposition of said lesion.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 64 words
Use of a substance or composition for ablating in vivo in the presence of sodium chloride in solution, or saline solution, a lesion in a blood vessel of a human or animal body, said substance or composition being excitable to produce ultraviolet radiation of wavelength in the 210 to 320 nm range and of sufficient energy fluence for causing ablative photodecomposition of said lesion.
