Claim 1
Independent Claim
145 words
A metal-ceramic composite body wherein a ceramic member (1) has a projection (4) of relatively small diameter extending from a relatively large diameter portion, the projection (4) being inserted into a recess (3) or through hole in a metallic member (2), characterised in that a gap (1 1 ) of length not less than the diameter (1 2 ) of the projection (4) is provided between the end (5) of the metallic member facing towards the ceramic member at the connection region and the opposed surface (6) of the large diameter portion of the ceramic member, and the thickness of the end portion of the metallic member gradually reduces, to form a tapering portion (7), towards the ceramic member with a radius of curvature (R) as seen in longitudinal section of not less than 0.4 times the diameter (1 2 ) of the projection (4).
Claim 2

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
39 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to claim 1, wherein the wall thickness of the tip (5) of the metallic member towards the ceramic member is not more than 0.2 times the diameter (1 2 ) of the projection (4).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the length of the tapering portion (7) is not less than 0.5 times the diameter (1 2 ) of the projection (4).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
32 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the large diameter portion of the ceramic member gradually reduces in transverse sectional area towards the projection (4).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
59 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the ceramic member (1) is a part of a rotary shaft of a turbocharger rotor on the side of a turbine wheel, and the metallic member (2) is a part of a rotary shaft of the turbocharger rotor on the side of a compressor wheel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
17 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to claim 5, wherein the ceramic member is made of silicon nitride.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
56 words
A metal-ceramic composite body according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the ceramic member (1) is a part of a cam sliding portion of a tappet, and the metallic member is a part of a body portion of the tappet or is a member adapted to be connected with the tappet body portion.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
191 words
A method of manufacturing a metal-ceramic composite body according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the metallic member (2) and the ceramic member (1) are joined together by fitting a projection (4) provided on the ceramic member to a recess (3) or through hole of the metallic member, comprising the steps of: (a) fitting the ceramic member to the metallic member in a manner such that a gap not narrower than the diameter of the projection (4) is provided between the end surface of the metallic member facing the ceramic member at the joint portion and the opposed surface of the large diameter portion of the ceramic member; (b) working the metallic member to reduce the thickness of the end portion of the metallic member, to form portion (7) tapering towards the ceramic member and having a radius of curvature (R) as seen in longitudinal section not less than 0.4 times the diameter of the projection, the length of the tapering portion and the thickness of the tip thereof being respectively not less than 0.5 times and not larger than 0.2 times the diameter of the projection (4).
