Abstract

Abstract The Invention envolves a sealed lead-acid battery comprising a cell element having positive plates, negative plates and separators, and electrolyte retained within micropore of the cell element. The micropores of both the plates is substantially filled with the electrolyte, while the micropores of the separators are not completely filled with the electrolyte. The voids formed partialy in the micropores of the separators permit transport of the oxygen gas from the positive plates to the negative plates. Such a sealed lead-acid battery has long service life, and excels in ability to O2 absorb gases and reproduce water during overcharging and to recover by charging after a long overdischarged-state storage.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 103 words
1) A sealed lead-acid battery comprising a cell element having positive plates, negative plates and separators, and electrolyte retained within micropores of said cell element, said separators having a lower electrolyte absorption and retention power than said positive plates and said negative plates thereby enabling said micropores of both said positive plates and said negative plates to be substantially filled with said electrolyte and thereby causing said micropores of the separators not to be completely filled with said electrolyte but allowing voids formed partialy therein to permit transport of the oxygen gas from said positive plates to said negative plates through said separators.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 103 words
1) A sealed lead-acid battery comprising a cell element having positive plates, negative plates and separators, and electrolyte retained within micropores of said cell element, said separators having a lower electrolyte absorption and retention power than said positive plates and said negative plates thereby enabling said micropores of both said positive plates and said negative plates to be substantially filled with said electrolyte and thereby causing said micropores of the separators not to be completely filled with said electrolyte but allowing voids formed partialy therein to permit transport of the oxygen gas from said positive plates to said negative plates through said separators.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
2) A sealed lead-acid battery according to claim 1, wherein relative contents of said electrolyte in said plates and said separators are such that the sum of the amount of said electrolyte contained in said positive plates and said negative plates is larger than the amount of said electrolyte contained in said separators.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
3) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 2, wherein said positive plates have a thickness of 3 to 4 mm and distances between said positive plates and said negative plates have a thickness of 0.7 to 1 mm.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
4) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 2, wherein distances between said positive plates and said negative plates have a thickness 0.4 to 0.25 times as said positive plates.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 47 words
5) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein said separators are formed preponderantly of glass fibers and the specific surface area per unit volume of said separators is smaller than both that of positive active material and that of negative active material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
6) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 5, wherein the total surface area of separators within the unit cell is smaller than both that of said positive active material and that of said negative active material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 38 words
7) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 5, wherein the amount of said positive active material per unit cell is 1.21 times or more than that of said negative active material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 40 words
8) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 5, wherein the theoretical capacity of the unit cell for said negative active material is 0.954 times or less than that for said positive active material.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 46 words
9) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 2 or Claim 5 or Claim 7 or Claim 8, wherein the discharge current density based on one side surface of a positive plate at the 10C discharge is in the range of 0.5 to 0.9 A cm
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 47 words
10) A sealed lead-acid battery according to Claim 2, Claim 5, Claim 7 or Claim 8, wherein said electrolyte contains a compound of at least one alkali metal selected from the group consisting of K, Na, and Li in a concentration of 0.1 to 0.5% by weight.
