Abstract

Abstract (57) In a charge/float vehicle electrical system, heavy battery (12) charging is effected during periods of engine deceleration by engine deceleration responsive means (224) and the float voltage is adjusted by generator control means (220) so as to maintain the battery (12) state of charge at the level in existence at the initiation of the float mode.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 364 words
A motor vehicle electrical system comprising a battery (12) adapted to supply power to vehicle electrical loads (14) and to be charged by an engine-driven generator (10), a regulator mechanism (36) for controlling the output voltage of said generator, control means (48) connected to the regulator mechanism effective in a charge mode of operation to control the generator output voltage as a function of the battery voltage and temperature, and float means (162,50) effective when the charging current supplied to the battery during the charge mode of operation of said control means falls to a predetermined value indicative of a satisfactory state of battery charge to interrupt the charge mode of operation and to initiate a float mode of operation wherein the generator output voltage is reduced to a float value substantially equal to the nominal open circuit terminal voltage of said battery to avoid the energy consumption associated with continued charging of the battery from the engine-driven generator after a satisfactory state of battery charge has been reached, characterised by engine deceleration responsive means (224) connected to the regulator mechanism and effective during engine deceleration in excess of a reference amount for increasing the generator output voltage to a fixed, relatively high value to produce relatively high battery charging current to thereby recoup kinetic energy from the vehicle during deceleration; current integrating means (172) for measuring and indicating the net current into and out of the battery (12); and generator control means (220) effective at the initiation of said float mode of operation for resetting said current integrating means (172) and thereafter for adjusting the generator output voltage in relation to said float value in accordance with the net current measurement of said current integrating means (172) such that the voltage is increased above said float value if the current integrating means (172) indicates a net current out of the battery (12) and decreased below said float value if the current integrating (172) means indicates a net current into the battery (12), to thereby maintain the satisfactory state of battery charge existing at the initiation of said float mode of operation despite variable electrical loading and variable battery charging occasioned by engine deceleration.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 364 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 122 words
A motor vehicle electrical system according to Claim 1, characterised by means (262) for disablingsaid engine deceleration responsive means (224) prior to the initiation of said float mode of operation; and means (254,256) connected to said float means (162,50) and effective after the initiation of said float mode of operation to delay a return to the charge mode of operation for a timed period sufficient in duration to allow the relatively high battery charging current effected by the engine deceleration responsive means (224) to fall to said predetermined value so that the relatively high battery charging current existing at the termination of a period of engine deceleration in excess of the reference amount is ineffective to reestablish the charge mode of operation.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 124 words
A motor vehicle electrical system according to Claim 1 wherein the generator (lO)includes a field winding (16) which is variably excited by the regulator mechanism (36) to control the generator output voltage, and wherein the generator (10) output capacity varies in direct relation to the level of field winding excitation, characterised by means (230) responsive to the operation of said regulator mechanism (36) and effective when the generator field winding (16) is substantially fully excited to override said float means (162,50) and to maintain establishment of said charge mode of operation thereby to prevent the float means (162,50) from initiating the float mode of operation when the generator (10) is unable to supply a proper amount of charging current due to heavy electrical loading.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 71 words
A motor vehicle electrical system according to Claim 1, characterised by the generators control means (220) includes a serial reistor network (46) connected to the regulator mechanism (36), switch means (76,78) controllable to selectively shunt one or more of the network resistors for adjusting the generator output voltage, and means (100) periodically enabled to control said switch means (76,78) in accordance with the net current measurement of said integrating means (172).
