Abstract

Abstract A fiber optic connector including a fiber securing ferrule which permits fiber cleaving therein. The ferrule includes a slot through its outer surface and internally of the end wall thereof to permit cleaving at a point recessed from the end wall. The cleaved fiber end face is positioned within the ferrule thus providing protection thereto.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
A ferrule for accommodating an optical fiber comprising: an elongate body having a longitudinal bore therethrough for accommodating said fiber, said body having a fiber receiving portion, a fiber egressing end surface and an outer peripheral surface merging with said fiber egressing end surface; said body having a fiber accessing opening extending through a portion of said outer peripheral surface, said fiber access opening communicating with said longitudinal bore for rendering said fiber exteriorally accessible inwardly of said fiber egressing end surface; and an outer peripheral surface merging with said fiber egressing end surface.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 94 words
A ferrule for accommodating an optical fiber comprising: an elongate body having a longitudinal bore therethrough for accommodating said fiber, said body having a fiber receiving portion, a fiber egressing end surface and an outer peripheral surface merging with said fiber egressing end surface; said body having a fiber accessing opening extending through a portion of said outer peripheral surface, said fiber access opening communicating with said longitudinal bore for rendering said fiber exteriorally accessible inwardly of said fiber egressing end surface; and an outer peripheral surface merging with said fiber egressing end surface.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The ferrule in accordance with claim 1 wherein said fiber accessing opening further extends through a portion of said end face.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
The ferrule in accordance with claim lor Claim 2 wherein said outer peripheral surface forms an external side wall substantially perpendicular to said egressing end and wherein said fiber accessing opening extends through said external side wall.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The ferrule in accordance with claim 3 wherein said opening extends through a portion of said external side wall, axially inwardly of said end surface.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
The ferrule in accordance with claim 3 or Claim 4 wherein said body portion is substantially cylindrical and said opening extends radially through said side wall.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 43 words
The ferrule in accordance with any preceding Claim including affixing means comprising a portion of said bore being dimensioned to frictionally engage said fiber; and an adhesive substance applied to said fiber for adhesively securing said fiber to said portion of said bore.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 80 words
A device for terminating an optical fiber contained in a fiber optic cable comprising: a housing having a cable accommodating end, a fiber egressing end and a bore therebetween; an elongate ferrule receivable in said housing bore and having opposed end portions and an axial bore therebetween for passage of said fiber; said ferrule including a substantially transverse opening extending through said elongate ferrule, adjacent one end thereof, in communication with said ferrule bore for providing access to said fiber.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 80 words
A device for terminating an optical fiber contained in a fiber optic cable comprising: a housing having a cable accommodating end, a fiber egressing end and a bore therebetween; an elongate ferrule receivable in said housing bore and having opposed end portions and an axial bore therebetween for passage of said fiber; said ferrule including a substantially transverse opening extending through said elongate ferrule, adjacent one end thereof, in communication with said ferrule bore for providing access to said fiber.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
The device in accordance with claim 7 wherein said ferrule extends externally beyond said fiber egressing end of said housing, said one end of said ferrule positioned externally of said housing.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 64 words
The device in accordance with Claim 7 or Claim 8 wherein said housing includes a cavity in communication with said housing bore, and said ferrule includes a second opening in communication with said ferrule bore and said housing cavity, said housing cavity and said second ferrule opening providing access to said fiber for receipt of adhesive material for securing said fiber in said ferrule.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 75 words
A device for supporting an optical fiber comprising: an elongate body portion having a central bore between opposed ends thereof for allowing passage of said fiber therethrough; said body portion including an elongate side wall having adjacent one end thereof, a slotted portion, extending through said side wall and one of said end faces, in communication with said bore for receipt of a fiber cleaving element; and means for securing said fiber in said bore.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 75 words
A device for supporting an optical fiber comprising: an elongate body portion having a central bore between opposed ends thereof for allowing passage of said fiber therethrough; said body portion including an elongate side wall having adjacent one end thereof, a slotted portion, extending through said side wall and one of said end faces, in communication with said bore for receipt of a fiber cleaving element; and means for securing said fiber in said bore.
