A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the first material is a piezoelectric ceramic.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
A method as claimed in Claim 2, characterized in that the second material is an electrical insulator which does not have piezoelectric properties.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim

A method as claimed in Claim 2, characterized in that the first material is a lead zirconium titanate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that the plates (11...19) of the first and second materials are flat plates.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
56 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that it further comprises the step of slicing said second laminated block (30) perpendicular to the strips of the first material to form a thin, composite piezoelectric plate and applying two or more electrodes (45, 50) to surfaces of said plate to form a composite piezoelectric transducer.

A method as claimed in Claim 7, characterized in that it comprises the step of applying at least three electrodes to the surfaces of said plate to form an array of composite transducer elements.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
28 words
A method as claimed in any one of Claims 1-8, characterized in that at least some of the plates of the first and/or second material are tapered plates.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
59 words
A composite piezoelectric transducer comprising a plurality of regions (80) of a first piezoelectric material disposed in a matrix of a second material, wherein the regions of the first material are isolated, one from another by regions of the second material, characterized in that the regions (80) of the first material are randomly or pseudorandomly distributed in the matrix.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
59 words
A composite piezoelectric transducer comprising a plurality of regions (80) of a first piezoelectric material disposed in a matrix of a second material, wherein the regions of the first material are isolated, one from another by regions of the second material, characterized in that the regions (80) of the first material are randomly or pseudorandomly distributed in the matrix.
