Abstract
Abstract A liquid-crystal composition to be used in a multiplex-driving system in a twisted nematic (TN) type liquid-crystal display devices of the present invention is extremely superior in its display characteristics, and is able to meet sufficiently the demands to increase the information content of various liquid-crystal display devices of high-level multiplexing operation. The liquid-crystal composition is more considerable in its usefulness than the validity thereof in half-tone display especially when it is used in a liquid-cristal television.

A mixed nematic liquid-crystal composition wherein at least one type or more selected respectively from a compound group (I) and a compound group (II) are simultaneously added to a mixture, which simultaneously contains 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-alkylpyrimidine compound N (R 1 R 1 =C n H 2n+1 , R 2 =C m H 2m+1 , n, m=1 through 12) and compound, which has cyanobiphenyl moiety as frame, said compound group (I) being compounds represented by the following general formulae wherein R 1 through R 8 show a straight-chain alkyl group of 1 through 6 in the number of carbon atoms, while R 3 and R 6 1 show straight-chain alkoxy groups of 1 through 6 in the number of carbon atoms, and said compound group ( II ) being compounds represented by the following general formulae wherein R 9 through R 22 show a straight-chain alkyl group of 1 through 10 in the number of carbon atoms.
