Abstract

Abstract A sensor measures the magnitude of a force applied to a brake operating member, such as a brake pedal. A desired magnitude of a braking force applied to a vehicle is determined in accordance with a changeable relationship between the desired braking force and the force applied to the brake operating member. The actual magnitude of the braking force is adjusted to the desired braking force magnitude. In place of the desired braking force, a desired rate of deceleration of the vehicle may be determined in accordance with a changeable relationship between the desired deceleration rate and the magnitude of the force applied to the brake operating member. In this case, the actual rate of deceleration of the vehicle is adjusted to the desired deceleration rate.
