Abstract

Abstract A differential mechanism comprises a casing (1), a pair of sun gears (6,7) rotatably mounted in the casing, each sun gear being adapted to be connected to a respective half shaft of a vehicle transmission, a first set of planetary pinions (16) arranged to surround and to be in meshing engagement with the sun gear (6) and a second set of planetary pinions (17) arranged to surround and to be in meshing engagement with the other sun gear, the two sets of planetary pinions (16, 17) being in meshing engagement with each other. The planetary pinions (16, 17) are journalled in respective pockets (13, 14) provided in the casing (1) with each pocket for one set of pinions intersecting two adjacent pockets for the other set of pinions whereby each pinion of one of the sets of planetary pinions meshes with two adjacent pinions of the other set of planetary pinions so that the planetary pinions mesh with each other in a full circle surrounding the sun gears.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 162 words
A differential mechanism comprising a casing, a pair of sun gears rotatably mounted in the casing, each said sun gear being adapted to be connected to a respective half shaft of a vehicle transmission, a first set of planetary pinions arranged to surround and to be in meshing engagement with one of the sun gears and a second set of planetary pinions arranged to surround and to be in meshing engagement with the other of the sun gears, the two sets of planetary pinions being in meshing engagement with each other, wherein the planetary pinions are journalled in respective pockets provided in the casing with each pocket for one set of pinions intersecting two adjacent pockets for the other set of pinions whereby each pinion of one of the sets of planetary pinions meshes with two adjacent pinions of the other set of planetary pinions so that the planetary pinions mesh with each other in a full circle surrounding the sun gears.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 162 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 1, wherein the sun gears and planetary pinions are provided with helical teeth.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 2, wherein the helical teeth are so arranged on the sun gears that, in normal operation, the sun gears are urged axially towards each other when the casing is rotating and the associated sets of planetary pinions are urged away from each other in an axial direction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 3, wherein thrust plates are provided at the ends of the casing against which the ends of respective sets of planetary pinions are arranged to bear.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 4, wherein the thrust plates are made of a friction material.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 5, wherein the sun gears are separated by a pair of thrust pads containing springs in the form of discs which serve to urge the sun gears against the respective thrust plates provided at the ends of the casing.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 46 words
A differential mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the sun gears are separated by a pair of thrust pads containing springs in the form of discs which serve to urge the sun gears away from each other in an axial direction.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
A differential mechanism according to claim 6 or claim 7, wherein the thrust pads are prevented from rotation with respect to the casing.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
A differential mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the sun gears are urged away from each other by at least one spring.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 37 words
A differential mechanism according to any preceding claim, wherein each sun gear is internally splined for receiving the splined end of a respective half shaft whereby relative axial movement is permitted but relative rotational movement is prevented.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 12 words
A differential mechanism substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 12 words
A differential mechanism substantially as described herein with reference to the drawings.
