Abstract

Bimodal or polymodal aqueous plastic dispersions are prepared by emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the aqueous phase in the presence of emulsifiers and initiators by adding a seed latex to the polymerization batch during the emulsion polymerization before conversion of over 40% by weight of the monomers used, the particles of which are smaller by a factor of 2 to 15 than the already formed particles of the emulsion polymer, the weight amount of the seed latex particles not exceeding 10% of the weight of the monomers and being in a ratio between 1: 4 and 1: 500 to the weight of the already polymerized monomers.
