Abstract

Abstract The invention is concerned with equipment by means of which it is possible to measure the fluorescence, luminescence, turbidity, and absorption of a liquid sample. The sample is placed in a cylindrical cuvette provided with a transparent bottom. The light is passed into the cuvette by means of optical fibres along the centre axis of the cuvette. The equipment additionally includes an optical system whose optical axis coincides with the centre axis of the cuvette, as well as a light detector. It is an essential feature of the equipmentthat a substantially equal proportion of the light departing from each volume element of the sampleis collected for detection, by means of the total reflection from the walls of the cuvette, through the optical system to the light detector, and that the optical system also collimates the light passed into the cuvette.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 160 words
Equipment for the measurement of the fluorescence, luminescence, turbidity, and absorption of liquid samples, whereat the liquid sample is subjected to measurement in a cylindrical cuvette provided with a transparent bottom, the light is arranged so as to be passed into the cuvette to be measured by means of optical fibres along the centre axis of the cuvette, and the equipment includes an optical system whose optical axis coincides with the centre axis of the cuvette to be measured, as well as at least one light detector, characterized in that a substantially equal proportion of the light departing from each volume element of the sample is collected, so as to be detected, by means of a total reflection taking place from the walls of the cuvette through the optical system to the light detector, and that the said optical system is arranged so that it also collimates the light of the source of light to be passed into the cuvette.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 160 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 70 words
Equipment as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the optical system is placed underneath the cuvette, or part of it is fitted so as to constitute the bottom of the cuvette, and that the end of the fibre bundle coming from the source of light as well as the end of the fibre bundle passing from the optical system to the light detector are attached to the optical system.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 68 words
Equipment as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the fibre bundle passing to the light detector is concentrically fitted around the fibre bundle coming from the source of light so that, in the common terminal plane of the fibre bundles next to the optical system, they are placed at a distance from each other, whereat an annular zone not containing optical fibres remains between them.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 95 words
Equipment as claimed in claims 1 to 3, characterized in that, between the ends of the fibre bundles and the cuvette bottom, the optical system consists of two plano-convex lenses, the plane surface of the first of them being in contact with the common terminal plane of the fibre bundles and the plano surface of the other one being turned as facing the cuvette, whereas the centre of curvature of the convex surface of the first lens is at the end of the fibre bundle along which the light coming from the light source passes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 41 words
Equipment as claimed in any of the preceding claims, characterized in that at the opposite side of the cuvette, relative the light source, there is a second light detector, which is used for the measurement of the absorption of the sample.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 152 words
Method for the measurement of the fluorescence, luminescence, turbidity, and absorption of liquid samples, in cylindrical cuvettes provided with a transparent bottom, in an equipment including an optical system whose optical axis concides with the centre axis of the cuvette to be measured, as well as a light detector, in which method the light is arranged so as to be passed into the cuvette to be measured by means of optical fibres along the centre axis of the cuvette, characterized in that a substantially equal proportion of the light departing from each volume element of the sample is collected, so as to be detected, by means of a total reflection taking place from the walls of the cuvette through the optical system to the light detector, and that the said optical system is arranged so that it also collimates the light of the source of light to be passed into the cuvette.
