Abstract

Abstract The skin and a subjacent body vessel (68) is pierced with a needle (16) mounted on a fluid-fillable chamber (12) at the opposite end of which is a plunger (14) movable into the chamber. In one embodiment, disposed within the needle and chamber is a closed-ended flexible catheter (20). A flexible stylet (22) is disposed in the catheter. The catheter is drawn through the needle and into the body vessel by pushing into the chamberthe plunger which engages the distal portion (54) of the stylet. The closed-ended pliable catheter is drawn into place in the body vessel by the pushing stylet while fluid is simultaneously infused into the body vessel to dilate it and thereby ease the advancement of the catheter with minimal damage to the vessel wall. The chamber (12) and needle (16) are removable from the catheter (20), leaving it in place in the body for the infusion of fluid. The another embodiment a stiffer, open-ended catheter is used and the plunger pushes directly against the catheter to push it into the body vessel.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
I. A method of percutaneously inserting into a body vessel a catheter having proximal and distal ends, including: piercing the skin and body vessel with a hollow needle mounted to one end of a fluid-filled chamber which contains at its opposite end a plunger partially disposed within said chamber, said catheter having its proximal end positioned within said needle and its distal end positioned adjacent said plunger; and causing the catheter to be pushed out of the needle and into the body vessel by advancing the plunger into the chamber.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 65 words
A method according to Claim I for inserting a flexible catheter having a closed proximal end, including providing within the catheter an internal pushing stylet having a proximal end abutting the proximal closed end of the catheter and a distal end abutting the plunger, whereby the plunger pushes the stylet which in turn pushes the catheter to draw the catheter from its closed proximal end.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 56 words
A method according to claim I or 2, including filling the chamber, needle, and plunger are filled with infusion fluid such that, while the catheter is being advanced by forward motion of the plunger, fluid is simultaneously infused from the chamber into the body vessel so as to hydrostatically dilate the vessel and facilitate catheter advancement.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method according to Claim 3, including intermittently pulling back on the plunger while the needle is being inserted to draw fluid from the body vessel into the chamber, thereby testing and confirming the needle position within the body vessel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method according to Claim 4, including intermittently pulling back on the plunger while the catheter is being inserted, thereby testing and confirming the needle position within the body vessel.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 138 words
An apparatus for inserting a catheter into a body vessel including syringe means including a body defining a chamber; a hollow needle mounted to one end of said body in communication with said chamber; a plunger slidably disposed in said chamber for movement between a first position adjacent the opposite end of said chamber and a second position adjacent said one chamber end; and a catheter having a proximal end and a distal end disposed within said chamber and needle in a first position with the proximal end of said catheter positioned within said needle and the distal end positioned adjacent said plunger, whereby movement of said plunger from said first position to said second position causes the catheter to be pushed out of said needle and into a body vessel in which said needle has been inserted.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 100 words
An apparatus according to Claim 6 for inserting a catheter having a closed proximal end, including a pushing stylet having proximal and distal ends positioned within said catheter with the proximal end of said stylet engaging the proximal end of said catheter and the distal end of said stylet abutting said plunger, whereby movement of said plunger from said first position to said second position causes said stylet to be pushed out of said needle and said stylet causes said catheter to be drawn out of said needle and into a body vessel into which said needle has been inserted.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 42 words
An apparatus according to Claim 7, in which the pushing stylet distal end is freely movable away from the plunger whereby movement of the plunger toward said first postion does not cause said catheter to be drawn back through the inserting needle.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 58 words
An apparatus according to any oen of claims 6 to 8, in which the chamber, needle and plunger are filled with sterile infusion fluid prior to catheter insertion whereby movement of the plunger to insert the said catheter into a body vessel simultaneously causes said fluid to be injected into the vessel and around and through the catheter.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 30 words
An apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 9, in which the plunger has an axial channel through which fluid may be directed into said chamber and needle.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 34 words
1 I. An apparatus according to any one of claims 5 to 10, in which the needle is of a breakaway type which may be removed from around the catheter insertion has been completed.
