Abstract

Abstract A scanner including a charge coupled device (CCD) and an analog-to-digital converter to digitize documents for storage, display and transmission to a remote location has attached to it a positioning device which comprises in the image plane of the document to be scanned a reticle (34) with a site pattern thereon, a lens (31) and a lamp (32) which are used to position a document for scanning. Prior to scanning the document the lamp (32) is briefly energized to project the site pattern onto an easel (18) on which the document is placed, and the portion of the document on which the pattern is projected is the portion that will subsequently be scanned by the scanner in the image plane of the document by the CCD.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
A document scanner for a facsimile and office information system being capable of dealing with the combination of text and graphic images, the system including a computer, key board (12), monitor (11), magnetic disc mass storage means (14), printer (13) and (raster)image scanner (15), the scanner comprising a positioning device to locate the document so that desired material or area thereon will be scanned without further repositioning of the document, characterized by means (32, 34, 31) associated with a scanning camera of the scanner (15) for projecting an image or frame, respectively onto the document, which defines the area on the document that will subsequently be scanned.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 107 words
A document scanner for a facsimile and office information system being capable of dealing with the combination of text and graphic images, the system including a computer, key board (12), monitor (11), magnetic disc mass storage means (14), printer (13) and (raster)image scanner (15), the scanner comprising a positioning device to locate the document so that desired material or area thereon will be scanned without further repositioning of the document, characterized by means (32, 34, 31) associated with a scanning camera of the scanner (15) for projecting an image or frame, respectively onto the document, which defines the area on the document that will subsequently be scanned.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 70 words
The scanner in accordance with claim-1, characterized in that the means for projecting an image comprises: a planar element reticle (34) having a frame thereon, and illumination means (32) energized to illuminate the planar element prior to scanning the document to thereby project the frame onto the document, the projected image defining the area on said document that will subsequently be scanned by the graphic data generator of the scanner.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 45 words
The scanner in accordance with claim 2, characterized by means (35, 36) adjacent to the planar element (34) and used for distributing light from the illumination means (32) evenly over the planar element (34) to provide a uniform projection of the frame on the document.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 60 words
The scanner in accordance with claim 3, characterized in that the light distributing mean comprises: a first fresnel lens (35) adjacent to the planar element (34) and a second fresnel lens (36) adjacent to the first fresnel lens, wherein both fresnel lenses (35, 36) cooperate to distribute the light from the illumination means (32) evenly over the planar element (34).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
The scanner in accordance with claim 4, characterized by a transparent heat absorbing member (33) between the illumination means (32) and both fresnel lenses (35, 36) to allow illumination of the planar element (34) while protecting the planar element and both fresnel lenses from heat generated by the illuminating means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The scanner in accordance with claim 2, characterized in that the planar element (34) is opaque and has the frame cut therethrough.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 121 words
The scanner in accordance with any of claims 2 to 6, wherein light reflected off the document is focused by a lens (31) onto an image plane across which the scanning device (28) is moved to thereby scan the document and generate an analog signal which is digitized to create a binary representation of the document, characterized in that the planar element (34) is located in the image plane whereat the document is focused before scanning begins, and the illumination means (32) is located on the side of the planar element opposite to the document and being energizeable to illuminate the planar element (34) prior to scanning the document to thereby project the image of the planar element onto the document.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
The scanner in accordance with claim 7, characterized in that the distance of the lens (31) with respect to the document and planar element (34) is variably adjustable.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 48 words
The scanner in accordance with any of claim 1 to 8, characterized in that the scanning camera (CCD array 28) is mechanically coupled to the planar element (34) and associated means and that these elements are commonly movably parallel to the document for scanning with the scanning camera.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 36 words
The scanner in accordance with any of claim 1 to 9, characterized in that the planar element (reticle 34) is a thin sheet of metal having the frame to be projected onto the document etched therethrough.
