Abstract

Abstract A closed loop air path extends from the area of the disk hub through holes in disk spacers (16) radially outwards across the disk surfaces, down the vertical walls of the disk enclosure and backthrough one of two parallel branchesto an impellor on thedisk hub. One of the parallel branches includes a high impedance, low volume filter (40) to remove debris. The other branch is a low impedance, high volume branch and includes the hot side of a heat exchange (51) which is an integral part of the disk file baseplate (12) on which the disk spindle (17) and positioning system components (11) are mounted. A separate open loop air path outside the disk enclosure includes an impeller surface (188) on a driving pulley (18) attached to the disk spindle (17) and passes through the cold side of the heat exchanger (51).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 160 words
A magnetic disk data storage device including a stack (13) of record disks (14) mounted on a spindle (17) supported in a baseplate (12), means (11) for positioning a plurality of air bearing transducers relative to the record disks and air circulating means (33, 34) for circulating air in a substantially closed loop path (30) which extends from the spindle radially outwards across the surfaces of the disks (14) and back to the spindle (17) characterised by the device including a heat exchanger (51) disposed in the base plate (12) and means (18A) for directing cooling air through one side (62) of the heat exchanger (51), and by the closed loop path comprising a pair of parallel branches (31, 32), one branch (31) including a filter (40) which presents a relatively high impedance to air flow and the other branch (32) presenting a relatively low impedance to air flow and including the other side (50) of the heat exchanger (51).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 160 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A data storage device as claimed in claim 1, in which the air circulating means includes an impellor (34) mounted on the spindle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 62 words
A data storage device as claimed claim 1 or claim 2, in which a disk hub (15) is mounted on the spindle and the disks (14) are mounted on the hub in spaced relationship by disk spacer rings (16) which are provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings to permit air to be directed through the openings to the disk surfaces.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
A data storage device as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the means for directing cooling air through said one side of the heat exchanger includes an impellor mounted on the spindle on the side of the baseplate remote from the stack of disks.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
A data storage device as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the other side (50) of the heat exchanger comprises a set of radially disposed rib members integral with the baseplate and a cover plate attached to the rib members so as to form a plurality of low impedance air passages.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
A data storage device as claimed in claim 5, in which said one side of the heat exchanger comprises a second set of radially disposed rib members and a second cover plate attached to the second set of rib members.
Claim 8
