Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 71 words
A crystalline polyarylnitrile polymer having repeating units of the following formula: wherein A is independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and halogen, a is an integer of 1 or 2 and b is an integer of 1 to 3 and wherein the polyarylnitrile polymer has a reduced viscosity of at least 0.3 dl/g as measured in p-chlorophenol at 50°C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 71 words
A crystalline polyarylnitrile polymer having repeating units of the following formula: wherein A is independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and halogen, a is an integer of 1 or 2 and b is an integer of 1 to 3 and wherein the polyarylnitrile polymer has a reduced viscosity of at least 0.3 dl/g as measured in p-chlorophenol at 50°C.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A crystalline polyarylnitrile as defined in claim 1 having repeating units of the following formula:
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A crystalline polyarylnitrile as defined in claim 1 having repeating units of the following formula:
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 162 words
A process for preparing the polymer of claims 1 or 2 or 3 which comprises the following steps: (a) reacting substantially equimolar amounts of a dihydroxy compound of the formula: wherein A and b are as defined in claim 1 with a substantially equimolar amount of a benzonitrile compound of the formula: wherein a is defined as in claim 1 and the X's are independently selected from Cl, F, Br or N0 2 , and an alkali metal carbonate in a solvent mixture comprising a solvent which forms an azeotrope with water and a dipolar aprotic solvent at a temperature less than 200°C, while continuously removing water from the reaction mass as an azeotrope with an azeotrope forming solvent to maintain the reaction at substantially anhydrous conditions to form an oligomer; (b) heating said oligomer at a temperature greater than 200°C for a period of time sufficient to form a polyarylnitrile polymer having a reduced viscosity of greater than about 0.3 dl/gm.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process as defined in claim 4 wherein the dihydroxy compound is of the formula:
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process as defined in claim 4 wherein the dihydroxy compound is of the formula:
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A process as defined in claim 4 wherein the benzonitrile is of the following formula:
