Abstract

Abstract A method to detect indirectly at least one gas, particularly dissolved gases, of an animal employing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (NMR). The method examines an NMR spectrum to determine chemical shift relaxation times or spin-spin couplings for an element of an animal influenced by at least one gas of the animal, the chemical shift corresponding to the amount or identify of the gas.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
A method of detecting indirectly at least one gas of an animal comprising subjecting the animal to an NMR spectrometer, detecting a first radio-frequency signal derived from resonance of an element of the animal influenced by a gas, detecting a second radio-frequency signal derived from an element independent of the animal uninfluenced by the gas, and comparing the signals to detect the gas.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 63 words
A method of detecting indirectly at least one gas of an animal comprising subjecting the animal to an NMR spectrometer, detecting a first radio-frequency signal derived from resonance of an element of the animal influenced by a gas, detecting a second radio-frequency signal derived from an element independent of the animal uninfluenced by the gas, and comparing the signals to detect the gas.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the gas is determined from NMR chemical shift, NMR relaxation time, or NMR spin-spin coupling derived from the radio-frequency signals of the detected element.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the chemical shift corresponds to an amount or identity of the gas.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 63 words
A method as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the element is either fluorine, a perfluorocarbon, a derivative of perfluorocarbon, a perfluoro(metbylcyclohexane), perfluoro (1,3-dimethylcyclohexane), perfluoro (decahydronaphthalene), perfluoro (decahydro-1-methylnaphthalene), or mixtures thereof, perfluorinated bycyclononane, perfluorinated bicyclooctane, perfluorinated adamantane hydrocarbon, perfluoromethyladamantane and perfluorodimethylbicyclo-[3.3.1.]nonane, perfluorodimethyladamantane and perfluorotrimethylbicyclo[3.3.1.]nonane, perfluorotetrahydrodicyclopentadiene and perfluorobicyclo[5.3.0.]decane, perfluorotetrahydrodicyclopentadiene, perfluorinated bicyclononane, perfluorinated bicyclooctane, perfluorinated adamantane hydrocarbon, perfluoromethyladamantane and perfluoro- trimethylbicyclo[3.3.1.]nonane, or perfluorotetrahydrodicyclopentadiene and perfluorobicyclo[5.3.0.]-decane.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 30 words
A method as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the gas is a blood or tissue gas, or carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen or any combination thereof.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 19 words
A method as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the gas is a foreign gas introduced into the animal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the foreign gas is an anesthetic gas.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 35 words
A method as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the detected signals in at least one region of the animal is further processed to reconstruct at least one projection of the gas in the animal.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method as-claimed in Claim 8 wherein the projection is an image.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 24 words
A method as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the method is used to determine and/or monitor a gaseous physiological state in the animal.
