Abstract
Abstract An assembly of elements (1) and (2) made of aluminium or an aluminium-based alloy is produced by introducing between the elements (1) and (2) an intermediate metal (3, 4,5,6 and 7)and laser welding them together. An alloy layer including the intermediate metal is formed in a weld zone between the elements and this exhibits neither cracks nor voids and so produces an airtight seal.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
53 words
A process for welding together elements (1, 2) made of aluminium or an aluminium-based alloy in which the elements are welded together by laser irradiation of a weld zone, characterised in that an intermediate metal material (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) is located between adjacent surfaces of the elements in the weld zone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
65 words
A process according to claim 1, in which the intermediate metal material is integrally bonded to the surface of at least one of the elements (1, 2) by the at least one (1) of the elements being clad with the intermediate metal material (4) or by the intermediate metal material (5) being deposited on the surface of the at least one (1) of the elements.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A process according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the intermediate metal material (3, 4, 5) consists of an aluminium-based alloy material which contains from 4.0% to 12.5% by weight of silicon.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
26 words
A process according to claim 3, in which the intermediate metal material (3, 4, 5) has a thickness in a range from 100 to 1,000 gm.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
25 words
A process according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the intermediate metal material (3, 4, 5) consists essentially of silicon, zinc or nickel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
47 words
A process according to claim 5, in which the thickness of the intermediate metal layer (3, 4, 5) is selected such that after welding has been completed the silicon, zinc or nickel is present in the weld zone in a range from 4.0% to 12.5% by weight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
30 words
A process according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the intermediate metal material (6, 7) consists of a composite of alternately deposited copper (6) and nickel (7) layers.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
36 words
A process according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the weld zone of the elements (1, 2) including the intermediate metal material (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) is irradiated by a YAG laser.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
64 words
An assembly of welded-together elements (1, 2) produced by a process in accordance with any one of the preceding claims, in which the elements are a cover (1) and a casing (2), the assembly forming a package for electronic devices, with the casing body (2) including a recess and the cover (1) and casing (2) being welded together to provide an inner airtight space.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
31 words
An assembly according to claim 9, in which the package contains semiconductor devices forming a microwave amplifier or in which the package forms a substrate on which semiconductor devices are mounted.
