Abstract

Abstract A device (24) forthe unidirectional transdermal administration of a drug in an ointment, cream or jelly-like carrier comprising a laminar applicator adapted to receive a predetermined quantity of the drug on a skin-contacting surface thereof (27), the applicator including a drug-impervious lamina (25), such as a layer of aluminium foil, overlying said skin-contacting surface, such that in use a unidirectional transfer of the drug from the carrier to the skin surface is ensured. The device is especially suitable for the transdermal administration of nitroglycerin, clonidine, methadone and scopolamine or any drug that is skin-permeable. The drug receiving surface may be embossed, pressed, or stamped to define one or more mini-recesses or recpetacles (26,27) for receiving the drug to be administered.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 80 words
A device for the unidirectional transdermal administration of a drug in an ointment, cream or jelly-like carrier (22) comprising a laminar applicator adapted to receive a predetermined quantity of the drug on one of the two major surfaces (20) thereof, characterized in that at least one major surface (23) of said applicator is composed of a material impervious to said drug, such that in use a unidirectional transfer of the drug from the carrier to the skin surface is ensured.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 80 words
A device for the unidirectional transdermal administration of a drug in an ointment, cream or jelly-like carrier (22) comprising a laminar applicator adapted to receive a predetermined quantity of the drug on one of the two major surfaces (20) thereof, characterized in that at least one major surface (23) of said applicator is composed of a material impervious to said drug, such that in use a unidirectional transfer of the drug from the carrier to the skin surface is ensured.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
A device according to claim 1, characterized in that the laminar applicator has a bilaminar structure (20,23) comprising a drug receiving lamina (20) and an intimately associated drug impervious lamina (23).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
A device according to claim 2, wherein the drug receiving lamina (20) consists of paper, cardboard, foam or plastics material, which is adapted to receive a predetermined amount of the drug (22) to be administered.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
A device according to claim 2 or 3 characterized in that the drug impervious lamina (23) is composed of aluminium, especially aluminium foil, fluorinated ethylene-propylene or a tetrafluoroethylene fluorocarbon polymer.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 23 words
A device according to any one of claims 2-4, wherein the applicator comprises a paper-aluminium foil bilayer (11,12) of approximately lmm in thickness.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 34 words
A device according to any one of claims 2-5, characterized in that the drug receiving lamina is embossed, pressed or stamped to define one or-more mini-recesses or receptacles (21) for receiving the drug (22).
Claim 8
Independent Claim 47 words
A device according to any one of claims 1-5, characterized in that the drug receiving surface (25) has one or more recesses (27) defined by one or more cut-outs in a strip of flexible foam material or by foam strips (26) suitably affixed to said surface (25).
Claim 9
Independent Claim 39 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein the drug is present in the carrier in admixture with one or more agents which facilitate association of the drug with said carrier and/or the release thereof to the skin surface.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 34 words
A device according to any preceding claim, wherein the drug is nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide monostearate, clonidine, methadone or scopolamine, especially nitroglycerin at a concentration of 2% by weight in a lanolin-white petrolatum base.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
Use of a device according to any preceding claim for the transdermal administration of a drug in an ointment, cream or jelly-like carrier.
