Abstract

Abstract 57 A cermet material comprises an intergrown network of a minor proportion of ceramic such as TiB2 in a metal matrix such as Al. The cermet is prepared by forming a minor proportion by weight of a ceramic phase in situ in a molten metal phase and holding the mixture of elevated temperature for a time to effect formation of an intergrown ceramic network.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 41 words
A cermet material comprising a minor proportion by weight of a ceramic in a major proportion by weight of a metal matrix, characterized in that the material has a microstructure of an intergrown network of the ceramic in the metal matrix.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 41 words
A cermet material comprising a minor proportion by weight of a ceramic in a major proportion by weight of a metal matrix, characterized in that the material has a microstructure of an intergrown network of the ceramic in the metal matrix.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A cermet material as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ceramic content is from 10% to 45% by weight.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
A cermet material as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the metal matrix is one or more of Al, Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Zr, and Hf or an alloy thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 56 words
A cermet material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the metal is aluminium or an aluminium alloy and most or all of the ceramic is a diboride of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, V or Cr, the ceramic forming an open- cell continuous network the interstices of which are filled with metal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A cermet material as claimed in claim 4, wherein from 20% to 30% of diboride is present.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
A cermet material as claimed in claim 4, or claim 5, wherein up to 20% by weight of a non-boride ceramic is also present.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A cermet material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6, prepared by forming the ceramic in situ in a molten metal phase.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 58 words
A method of making a cermet material, which method comprises forming a minor porportion by weight of dispersed particles of a ceramic phase in situ in a major proportion of a molten metal phase, and holding the molten metal phase containing the dispersed particles at elevated temperature for a time to effect formation of an intergrown ceramic network.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 58 words
A method of making a cermet material, which method comprises forming a minor porportion by weight of dispersed particles of a ceramic phase in situ in a major proportion of a molten metal phase, and holding the molten metal phase containing the dispersed particles at elevated temperature for a time to effect formation of an intergrown ceramic network.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method as claimed in claim 8, in which the ceramic phase is formed by reacting a carbon- , boron- and/or nitrogen-bearing ceramic precursor, or carbon, boron and/or nitrogen in elemental form, with the molten metal phase.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method as claimed in claim 8, in which the ceramic phase is formed by reacting in situ in the molten metal phase two non-metallic ceramic precursors.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 39 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 10, wherein the metal is aluminium or an aluminium alloy and most or all of the ceramic is a diboride of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, V or Cr.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as claimed in claim 11,- wherein the ceramic is or comprises TiB 2 produced by adding K 2 TiF 6 with KBF 4 to the molten metal phase.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 42 words
A method as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein the proportion of ceramic in the metal matrix is increased by squeeze casting the molten metal containing the ceramic phase under conditions to effect removal of unwanted molten metal.
