An engine part comprising a ceramic member (1, 12) and a metallic member (6, 13) joined thereto, wherein the ceramic member (1, 12) has a metallized layer (2) formed on the surface thereof which is joined to the metallic member and a metallic buffer (3) is joined to the metallized layer (2) and to the metallic member, characterised in that the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metallic member (6, 13) is greater than that of the ceramic member (1, 12), the metallized layer (2) of the ceramic member has a metal-plated surface and the metallic buffer has a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially equivalent to or smaller than that of the ceramics member (1, 12) and is bonded to the metal-plated surface of the metallized layer, whereby the metallic member is integrally joined to the ceramics member with the metallized layer (2), the metal-plated surface thereof and the metallic buffer disposed between the metallic member and the ceramic member.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
An engine part according to claim 1 wherein the joint between the metallic buffer (3) and the metallic member (6, 13) is formed by one of brazing, diffusion bonding, welding and insert casting, or the metallic buffer and the metallic member are bolted together.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
53 words
An engine part according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the metallic buffer (3) has a coefficient of thermal expansion which is less than 14x10- 6 ( O C- 1 ) and is made of titanium, a titanium alloy, ferritic stainless steel, an iron-chromium alloy, an iron-chromium-nickel alloy, or an iron-nickel alloy.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
46 words
An engine part according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the area of bonding between the metallic buffer (3) and the ceramics member (1, 12) is larger than the area of bonding between the metallic buffer (3) and the metallic member (6, 13).
