Abstract

Abstract A brake actuator (30) provides an increased pressure force (32) on a pressure plate (22) to compress a disk brake stack (20) for braking action of a rotating wheel (18). The actuator (30) includes a high torque spring (70, 72, 74) that works in association with either an electrictorque motor (40) or a ball-screw mechanism (50) to achieve an increased torque output to a ring gear (46) that drives a ram (56) of the ball-screw mechanism into or out of engagement with the pressure plate (22), the spring being adapted to either brake actuation or de-activation modes of operation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 161 words
An improved brake assembly having a plurality of actuators to provide a force on a pressure plate associated with a brake disk stack comprised of a plurality of interacting friction disks to compress the disk stack and effect braking of a rotating member, each of said actuators including an electric signal activated torque motor having an output drive shaft and a pinion gear driving a ball-screw mechanism comprised of a ring gear and a ball screw ram, the ring gear and ram interacting through a plurality of balls seated in a ball slot in the ring gear and a screw slot in the ram wherein rotational motion of the pinion drives the ring gear which effects a linear motion of the ram to apply a force on the brake pressure plate, the improvement characterized by: a high torque spring associated with each of said actuators to provide an output torque force that assists the torque motors in driving the ball-screw mechanism.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 161 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The improved brake assembly as set forth in Claim 1 characterized by torque springs that are pre-wound such as to deliver output torque to the motor drive shafts when said motors are activated for brake actuation and which springs are re-wound to their original conditions when the motors are reversed for brake de-activation.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
The improved brake assembly as set forth in Claim 1 characterized by torque springs that are initially unwound but are wound by their respective torque motors when said motors are activated for brake actuation and which deliver output torque to the motor drive shafts when said motors are reversed for brake de-activation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 82 words
The improved brake assembly as set forth in Claim 1 characterized by a single high torque spring mounted between the brake pressure plate and the ball-screw mechanism, one end of the spring connected to the ram while the opposite end is connected to the ring gear, said spring providing a torque force to the ring gear to assist rotational motion thereof when the torque motors are activated by an electrical signal indicative of a requirement for braking action of the rotating member.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 47 words
The improved brake assembly as set forth in Claim 4 characterized by a spring that is initially pre-wound such that activation of the torque motors effects unwinding of the spring in the same direction that the ring gear is rotated to assist in the brake actuation action.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 56 words
The improved brake assembly as set forth in Claim 4 characterized by a spring that is initially in an unwound condition and is wound by the ring gear when the torque motors are activated for brake actuation said spring providing output torque to the ring gear in the reverse direction to assist in deactivating the brake.
