Abstract

Bistable ceramic bending element, which is set up and operable in such a way that no separate apparatus measures need to be taken for the depolarization. The bending element consists of two ceramic plates made of an easily polarizable ferroelectric ceramic with a low coercive field strength, of which one plate polarizes and the bending element is thus deflected. The other plate is not polarized. The depolarization of the polarized plate can take place simultaneously with the polarization of the plate which has not been polarized until then, because the polarization state can be exchanged simply by briefly applying a direct voltage across the two outer electrodes, which leads to the polarization of the plate which has just not been polarized. The displacement currents that are released during this polarization process have the result that the two plates are connected in series so that the other plate is precisely depolarized. This process can be repeated any number of times. The bending element can advantageously be used as a switch in measuring devices in optical communications technology.
