Abstract

Abstract The invention concerns a generally cylindrical pressure-resistant impervious vessel having a polymeric matrix shell reinforced by filaments wherein one or more systems of said filaments are oriented to provide substantial tensile strength reinforcement to the shell in its axial dimension. A feature of the invention is that the axial tensile strength of the pressure shell is contemplated and controlled by the presence of reinforcing filaments generally disposed parallel to or within about 20°, or at least no more than about 45°, to the axis of the shell. Another feature is that these filaments follow continuous unbroken paths for a substantial distance along the shell, then at one end wrappingly engage a rigid ring (42,44) and thereafter return toward their starting position in unbroken paths.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 49 words
A rigidized filament-reinforced impervious hollow cylindrical pressure vessel, having filaments in or adjacent the wall of said vessel lying not more than 45° displaced from parallel to the long axis of the cylinder, which filaments wrappingly engage rigid rings positioned at one or both ends of said hollow cylinder.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 49 words
A rigidized filament-reinforced impervious hollow cylindrical pressure vessel, having filaments in or adjacent the wall of said vessel lying not more than 45° displaced from parallel to the long axis of the cylinder, which filaments wrappingly engage rigid rings positioned at one or both ends of said hollow cylinder.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 1, wherein one system of filaments lying at an angle less than 45° to the cylinder long axis follows a continuous path from a first end of said cylinder to the second end and returns to said first end after wrappingly engaging a rigid ring positioned at said second end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 107 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 1, wherein a first system of filaments lying at an angle less than 45° to the cylinder long axis follows a continuous path from a first end of said cylinder to the second end and returns to said first end after wrappingly engaging a first rigid ring positioned at said second end, and a second system of filaments lying at an angle less than 45° to the cylinder long axis follows a continuous path from the second end of said cylinder to the first end and returns to said second end after wrappingly engaging a second rigid-ring positioned at said first end.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 89 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 1 wherein a system of filaments lying at an angle less than 45° to the cylinder long axis follows a continuous path from a first end of said cylinder to the second end thereof where it reverses direction to return to said first end where it again reverses direction to follow a path back to the second end, thereby generating three traversals of the cylinder length, and whereby at each cylinder end said filaments wrappingly engage a rigid ring between two of said traversals.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 1, wherein a second system of filaments is generally oriented between 45° and 90° to the cylinder long axis.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 2, wherein a second system of filaments is generally oriented between 45° and 90° to the cylinder long axis.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 3, wherein a second system of filaments is generally oriented between 45° and 90° to the cylinder long axis.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 4, wherein a second system of filaments is generally oriented between 45° and 90° to the cylinder long axis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 5, wherein the filaments are assembled in the form of a triaxial braid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 18 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 6, wherein the filaments are assembled in the form of a triaxial braid.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The pressure vessel of Claim 7, wherein the filaments are assembled in the form of a triaxial braid.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 19 words
. The pressure vessel of Claim 8, wherein the filaments are assembled in the form of a triaxial braid.
