Abstract

Abstract @ A high performance, low cost variable reluctance stepper motor has an integral structure (10) with a ring (11) and a plurality of aligned salient pole members (12). A plurality of teeth (14) are located on the face of each pole member (12). Windings (13) are disposed on alternate ones of the pole members and a high impedance means (19) isolates the pole members from one another. A rotor with a plurality of teeth (16) and a plurality of holes (18) disposed thereon coacts with the pole members (12) and is moved in a step fashion by the sequential energization of the windings (13). The flux generated by the energization of the windings (13) is confined to a short path and coupling to the remainder of the structure is negligible. Recesses (20) positioned symmetrically around the structure enhance flux splitting and reduce adjacent flux coupling.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 133 words
A variable reluctance stepper motor comprising an integral pole member structure (10) having a ring (11) and a plurality of aligned salient pole members (12) and a variable reluctance member (15) having a second plurality of teeth (16), said variable reluctance member (15) coacting with said pole members (12), characterized by each of said pole members having a pole face and a first plurality of teeth (14) on said pole face, a plurality of windings (13) disposed on alternate ones of said pole members (12), a high magnetic impedance means (19) for substantially isolating said pole members (12) from one another; and whereby the magnetic flux paths created by the energization of said windings (13) are confined in such a manner as to reduce flux diversion and increase the torque of said motor.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 133 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The motor according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of inwardly projecting recesses (20) disposed around the periphery of said structure such that each of said recesses are located approximately in the lateral center of a non-winding pole member (12), said recesses not being deep enough to completely pierce said ring (11).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said impedance means are air gaps (19).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said motor is of the rotary type.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said structure (10) is stationary and said variable reluctance member (15) is movable.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said variable reluctance member (15) further includes a plurality of aligned holes (18).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said variable reluctance member is a rotor (15).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
The motor according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said first plurality of teeth (14) are circumferentially positioned with respect to said second plurality of teeth (16).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
The motor according to claim 8, wherein at least one of said first plurality of teeth (14) is offset from at least one of said second plurality of teeth (16).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
The motor according to claim 8, wherein at least two of said first plurality of teeth (14) are aligned with at least two of said second plurality of teeth (16).
