Abstract

Abstract A mufti-contact electrical connector for electrically connecting a plurality of wires (35) to a printed circuit board (3). The connector includes an open topped housing (10) including a plurality of contact chambers (11), wire holding portions (17,18) and terminal receiving bores (15) with the terminal receiving bores (15) intersecting the lower portions of the contact chambers (11) and extending in parallel with wire (35) engaged in the wire holding portions (17,18), each of the wire holding portions (17,18) including means whereby the wire (35) placed therein is securely held, each of the contact chambers (11) including a contact (25) including a pair of press means (26,26') with a space (27) therebetween, the space (27) being narrower than the diameter of the conductor (36) of the wire (35) whereby the insulating coverage (37) of the wire is broken by the side ridges of the press means (28,26') thereby to allow the conductor (35) to make electrical contact with the contact (25), the contact (25) also including means (31) whereby the respective terminal (1) inserted in the terminal receiving bore (15) is detachably held to effect electrical connection therebetween.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 200 words
1 A multi-contact electrical connector for connecting a plurality of electrical wires to respective terminals of a printed circuit board, the connector comprising: an open-topped housing of insulating material shaped to define contact chambers, wire receiving portions and terminal receiving bores and a plurality of contacts, characterised in that:- the terminal receiving bores (15) intersect lower portions of the contact chambers (11) and extend in parallel with the wire receiving portions (16); each wire receiving portion (16) includes means (17,18) whereby a wire (35) placed therein is securely held; each contact chamber (11) receives a respective one of the electrical contacts (25); each electrical contact includes a pair of press means (26,26') with a space (27) therebetween, the space (27) being narrower than the diameter of the conductor (36) in the wire (35) whereby the insulating coverage (37) of the wire (35) is broken by side portions of the press means (26,26') thereby to bring the conductor (36) into electrical contact with the respective contact (25); and each contact (25) includes means (30,31,32) whereby a terminal (1) inserted in the respective terminal receiving bore (15) is detachably engaged to effect electrical connection between the contact (25) and the terminal (1).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 200 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
2 A multi-contact electrical connector according to claim 1, characterised in that each contact (25) is a one-piece structure stamped from a sheet of metal and fabricated by bending.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
3 A multi-contact electrical connector according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterised in that the pair of press means (26,26') of each contact (25) are constituted by one pair of opposing side walls of a box shaped body of the contact (25).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 64 words
4 A multi-contact electrical connector according to claim 3, characterised in that said means (30,31,32) of each contact (25) for engaging the respective terminal (1) comprises extended portions (30) of another pair of opposing side walls (29) of the box-shaped body of the contact (25) with terminating end portions (31) of said extended portions (31) rolled so as to impart a springing force thereto.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 111 words
5 A multi-contact electrical connector according to claim 1, characterised by an insulator base (2) located between the housing (10) and the printed circuit board (3), the insulator base (2) including means for allowing the terminals (1) which are of post-type and erected on the printed circuit board (3) to pass therethrough, a back wall (5) uprightly provided thereon such that the back wall extends parallel with the terminals (1) received in the insulator base (2), the back wall (5) including projections (6) engageable with the wire holding means (17) of the wire receiving portions (16) to screen the wire receiving portions (16) against external impurities, such as water or dirt.
