Abstract

Abstract Reinforced medico-surgical tubes are produced by first extruding a flexible tube, cooling it, then coiling a filament helix about the cooled tube, extruding an outer layer of flexible material over the helix and base tube, cutting the resulting laminated tube into sections and forming filament-free ends on the cut sections.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
A method of producing reinforced medico-surgical tubes each having a distal end and proximal end joined by a central body portion which comprises: extruding a continuous flexible base tube, cooling the extruded tube, coiling a filament helix about the cooled continuous tube, extruding an outer layer of flexible material onto the base tube and filament helix forming a continuous flexible final tube comprising filament helix laminated between said base tube and said outer layer, cutting said final tube into sections of predetermined length, and forming filament-free distal ends upon the cut section of final tube.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 95 words
A method of producing reinforced medico-surgical tubes each having a distal end and proximal end joined by a central body portion which comprises: extruding a continuous flexible base tube, cooling the extruded tube, coiling a filament helix about the cooled continuous tube, extruding an outer layer of flexible material onto the base tube and filament helix forming a continuous flexible final tube comprising filament helix laminated between said base tube and said outer layer, cutting said final tube into sections of predetermined length, and forming filament-free distal ends upon the cut section of final tube.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein filament-free proximal ends are formed on said cut section of said final tube in addition to said filament-free distal ends.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said outer layer is extruded from similar type material as said base tube.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 44 words
A method according to anyone of claims 1 to 3, wherein said distal ends are formed by positioning a cut section of final tube as an insert in an injection mold and injection molding said distal end on an end of said cut section.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 39 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said distal ends are formed by providing a preformed filament-free tip and welding said tip to an end of one of said cut sections of final tube.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 62 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein portions of said base tube at spaced intervals remain free of filament helix prior to said extrusion of said outer layer, the cutting of said final tubes is performed through said filament-free portions and said filament-free distal ends are formed by shaping of the final tube in the filament-free portion.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method according to claim 6, wherein said portions of said base tube that remain free of filament helix are formed by intermittently stopping the coiling of filament helix about said continuous tube.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method according to claim 6, wherein said portions of said base tube that remain free of filament helix are formed by cutting away portions of filament helix from said base tube prior to extrusion of said outer layer thereon.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 46 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the end of-the filament helix of a cut section of final tube is bent into a loop before said filament-free distal end is formed and said distal end is formed to envelope said loop.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 22 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein said filament helix is formed from tempered stainless steel wire.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 25 words
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said base tube and said outer layer are formed of plasticised polyvinyl chloride.
