Abstract

A fluid level detecting apparatus includes a light transmitting and receiving head (4) mounted above the maximum allowable level of fluid in a container of a fluid. The head (4) comprises a beam subdivision means (6) for projecting a light beam derived from an amplitude modulated light source (1) by an optical fiber (3) on the surface of the fluid, and a lens (8) for receiving the light reflected by the surface of the fluid. The reflected light and the non-reflected light transmitted by the beam splitting means (6) are concentrated in optical fibers (9, 10) which transmit the reflected and non-reflected light along paths of substantially equal length up to a comparator means (12, 13, 17) which compares the optical phase of the reflected light with that of the non-reflected light in order to detect the difference between the phases and thus control the level of the surface of the fluid (7) below the head (4).
