Abstract

Abstract A multiprocessing system is partitionable into different applications under software control. The sub-systems of the system are permanently interconnected physically, and a sub-system access unit is provided to enable and disable the sub-system interconnections according to the configuration required. The sub-system access unit includes an interface (410) receiving partitioning requests from command sources which are passed over a channel (412), together with an identification of the command source, to address a cabling information table stored in the sub-system access unit, and this provides an identification of the input/output processor of the application concerned. The sub-system access unit processor then checks whether the command source is one that has been assigned to that application, and if not rejects the request. If the source identities match, the request is further checked against stored partitioning information to determine whether the change can be made, and if so, the necessary signals for enabling and disabling the interconnections are generated. If not, a signal causing the request to be rejected is generated. The stored information may include a signal indicating that a peripheral sub-system addressed through a shared peripheral interface is reserved to the exclusive use of a particular application, so that a partitioning change requesting access to that sub-system will be rejected.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 132 words
A multiprocessing system comprising a plurality of interconnected sub-systems partitionable into different applications, the system including a sub-system access unit (300) which includes command source interface means (512, 212) coupled to a plurality of sources of partitioning command signals, storage means (622) storing cabling information representing the types and physical interconnections of the components of the system, and information representing the state of partioning of the system, a data processor (610) arranged to receive a partitioning change request from a partitioning command source, and to produce, from information identifying the command source and from the said stored information, either, as the case may be, a signal rejecting the partitioning change request, or switching signals for enabling and disabling the sub-system interconnections so as to cause the requested partitioning change to take place.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 132 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 72 words
A multiprocessing system according to claim 1 in which the information stored in the sub-system access unit storage means (622) includes the identity of the partitioning change command source assigned to each application, and the data processor (610), on receiving a signal requesting a partitioning change, compares the identity of the signal source with the stored assigned identity for that application, and produces a rejection signal if the two do not correspond.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 76 words
A multiprocessing system according to claim 1 or claim 2 including at least one shared peripheral interface (540, 560) and in which the sub- system access unit storage means (622) includes stored information indicating whether or not a peripheral sub-system accessed through such an interface is dedicated to a particular application, and the data processor (610) produces a rejection signal in response to a partitioning change request requiring shared access to a peripheral sub-system so dedicated.
