Abstract
Abstract In a method of investigating the distribution of a quantity in a chosen region of a body (E) by nuclear magnetic resonance techniques movement of the body (E) during the investigation is monitored by probes (A, B C) attached to the body (E) and responsive to magnetic fields applied to the body (E) during the investigation. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also described.

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim
62 words
A method for investigating the distribution of a quantity in a chosen region of a body (E) by NMR techniques characterised in that an indication of movement of the body during the investigation is obtained by monitoring signals produced by probe means (A, B, C) attached to the body and responsive to a magnetic field applied to the body during the investigation.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
62 words
A method for investigating the distribution of a quantity in a chosen region of a body (E) by NMR techniques characterised in that an indication of movement of the body during the investigation is obtained by monitoring signals produced by probe means (A, B, C) attached to the body and responsive to a magnetic field applied to the body during the investigation.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method according to Claim 1 wherein said probe means comprises at least one NMR probe.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
40 words
A method according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein said probe means comprises three probes (A, B, C) each of which is of elongated form, and said probes are disposed with their respective major dimensions in mutually orthogonal relationship.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
40 words
A method according to Claim 3 wherein each said probe is disposed with its major dimension substantially parallel to the direction of the gradient of a different gradient magnetic field which may be applied to the body during the investigation.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
60 words
A method according to Claim 4 wherein one probe (A) is initially positioned so that it lies across an extension beyond the body of the slice of the body to be investigated, and the other two probes (B, C) initially lie in a said extension of said slice, adjacent the plane of one of the major surfaces of the slice.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
101 words
A method according to any preceding claim wherein the investigation comprises: causing nuclear magnetic excitation of nuclei in a selected region of the body; applying a gradient magnetic field in a chosen direction in the selected region to disperse the resonance frequency of excited nuclei in the direction of the gradient; and sensing the resonance signals during the application of said gradient field; and wherein the signals produced by said probe means are monitored after excitation of the nuclei in said region, before application of said gradient field, and said signals are subsequently monitored during the application of said gradient field.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
31 words
A method according to any one of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the signals produced by said probe means are monitored with at least one fixed reference gradient magnetic field applied.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
82 words
An apparatus for investigating the distribution of a quantity in a chosen region of a body (E) by NMR techniques characterised by probe means (A, 3, C) adapted for attachment to the body (E) during the investigation and responsive to a magnetic field applied to the body during the investigation; and means (29 Figure 1 and Figure 5) for monitoring the signals produced by said probe means during the investigation to provide an indication of movement of the body during the investigation.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
82 words
An apparatus for investigating the distribution of a quantity in a chosen region of a body (E) by NMR techniques characterised by probe means (A, 3, C) adapted for attachment to the body (E) during the investigation and responsive to a magnetic field applied to the body during the investigation; and means (29 Figure 1 and Figure 5) for monitoring the signals produced by said probe means during the investigation to provide an indication of movement of the body during the investigation.

Claim 13
Independent Claim
30 words
An apparatus according to any one of Claims 8 to 10 wherein said means for monitoring comprises means for monitoring the level of the signals produced by said probe means.
Claim 14
Independent Claim
30 words
An apparatus according to any one of Claims 8 to 11 wherein said means for monitoring comprises means for monitoring the frequency of the signals produced by said prcbe means.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
54 words
An apparatus according to Claim 12 wherein said means for monitoring comprises: first counter means (55A, 55B, 55C) arranged to accumulate to a fixed number of cycles of the signals produced by said probe means; and second counter means arranged to count clock pulses while the first counter means (59A, 59B, 59C) is running.
