Abstract

Abstract An apparatus for detecting an edge of a semitransparent plane substance such as a currency note comprises a light source array (12) including a plurality of light sources (L l .....L n ) and a photosensor array (13) including a plurality of photosensors (PS l .....PS n ). A selection circuit selects each of the light sources and the photosensors in sequence, to provide a set of light source/photosensor pairs, and a comparator circuit determines whether the output of the photosensor in each pair corresponds to that when no such substance exists between the light source array and the photosensor array, or the output when such a substance exists between them, thereby to detect an edge of such substance. By activating the photosensors and light sources in pairs, prior art inaccuracies arising from photosensors picking up spurious signals from other light sources can be avoided.
