Abstract

Abstract Apparatus is provided in which a code is carried by a member whose position it is desired to determine and is read by detecting means as the member moves to give an Indication of its position at any one time. The member 1 has a disc 3 attached to move with it. The disc 3 has two tracks on it, a pseudo-random code track 8 and a timing code track 4. Read heads 5, 6, 9 and 10 read the tracks thereby defining the position of the member 1. The signals from the read heads 5, 6, 9 and 10 are processed in a processing circuit PC to give the position of the member 1. The position is displayed at 2 which also provides a control for the member 1.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 131 words
Apparatus for indicating the position of a member (3) the apparatus including: a first track (8) on the member (3) and defining a sequence of digits; a detector (9, 10) positioned so that the digits move past it when the member (3) moves and arranged to write said digits into one end or other of a shift register (12) the contents of which indicate the said position; a second track (4) on the member (3) and sensing means (5, 6) co-operating with the second track (4) to produce timing signals determining when digits are written into the shift register (12); and a direction signal which is dependent on the direction of movement of the member (3) and which determines into which end of the shift register (12) the digits are written.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 131 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 73 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 and wherein the second track (4) defines regularly spaced indicia and the sensing means includes a second (5) and third (6) detector arranged to sense parts of the second track (4) which parts are spaced by a non-integral multiple of the spacing of the indicia so that the relative phase or timing of outputs from the second (5) and third (6) detectors is indicative of the direction of'movement.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 including means for using an output or outputs from the sensing means (5,6) in conjunction with the contents of the shift register (12) to indicate the position of the member (3) to a greater accuracy than would be indicated by the shift register contents alone.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 19 words
Apparatus according to any preceding claim in which the digits of the first track (8) define a pseudo-random sequence.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 49 words
Apparatus according to claim 4 in which the member (3) rotates and the pseudo-random sequence of digits extends continuously around the member (3), the pseudo-random sequence being such that all groups of n adjacent digits, where n is the number of elements in the shift register (12), are different.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
Apparatus according to claim 4 or 5 in which the pseudo-random sequence includes a group of n consecutive noughts and/or n consecutive ones where n is the number of elements in the shift register (12).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus for indicating the position of a rotatable member (3) comprising a pseudo-random sequence of digits (8) extending continuously around the member (3), the sequence being such that all groups of n adjacent digits are different; and means (9,10) for reading n adjacent digits from the member to give an indication of its position.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 54 words
Apparatus for indicating the position of a rotatable member (3) comprising a pseudo-random sequence of digits (8) extending continuously around the member (3), the sequence being such that all groups of n adjacent digits are different; and means (9,10) for reading n adjacent digits from the member to give an indication of its position.
