Abstract

Abstract A metal halogen battery construction has reactor (70) having at least two reaction zones (74, 77) with a reaction initiator device (76, 78) in each zone, whereby the reactor permits controlled recombination of hydrogen gas and halogen gas in the system to form hydrogen halide, which is then dispersed into the aqueous electrolyte of the battery.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 226 words
A metal halogen battery construction comprising at least one cell having a positive electrode (14) and a negative electrode (17), separated by aqueous electrolyte containing the material of said metal and halogen; a sump (18) wherein the electrolyte is collected; a store (20) wherein halogen hydrate is formed and stored as part of an aqueous material; means (Pl) for circulating electrolyte through the cell;and conduit means (C) for transmitting halogen gas formed in the cell to hydrate forming means (P2, H) associated with the store (20); characterized in that a reactor (70) is associated with said cell whereby halogen gas formed in the cell can be reacted to form hydrogen halide by controlled chemical reaction, said reactor including at least two reaction zones (74, 77) operative to prevent self- propagation of the reaction into other areas of the battery construction, the first reaction zone (74) being comprised of a reaction initiator (76) submersed in an aqueous medium to which hydrogen/halogen gas mixtures from the cell are introduced and reacted to form hydrogen halide, the second reaction zone (77) being comprised of a chamber in communication with the first zone (74) and also including a reaction initiator (78) to cause the reaction of any remaining hydrogen and halogen; and means (75) for returning the hydrogen halide formed in the reactor (70) for re-dispersion in the aqueous electrolyte.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 226 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A battery construction according to claim 1, characterized in that said battery construction is a zinc-chlorine battery construction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 61 words
A battery construction according to claim 1, or 2, characterized in that said aqueous medium in the first reaction zone (74) is the aqueous electrolyte, and means (79, 80) are provided to cause a desired amount of said electrolyte continually to flow from the battery sump (18) into the first reaction zone (74) to maintain a desired level of electrolyte therein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
A battery construction according to claim 3, characterized in that said electrolyte is an aqueous zinc-chloride electrolyte.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
A battery construction according to any preceding claim, characterized in that said chamber forming the second reaction zone (77) is a gas space immediately above the level of the aqueous medium in the first reaction zone (74).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A battery construction according to any preceding claim, characterized in that at least one of said reaction initiators is a fluorescent light.
