Abstract
Abstract Small peptides that display the specificity of FMD viral antigens. The peptides are useful in compositions and methods for the protection of animals for at least some time from FMD viral infections. The peptides of this invention may be prepared by conventional synthetic methods, recombinant DNA technology or a combination of the two. They may also be modified in composition and conformation to improve further their specific antigenic properties.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
120 words
A peptide displaying the antigenicity of an FMD viral antigen characterized in that a substantial part of said peptide comprises a sequence of amino acids selected from a region of maximum sequence divergence between protein VPl of the various FMDV subtypes, said peptide being further characterized in that antisera raised in rabbits against a single injection of 0.4 mg of the peptide after the appropriate coupling binds to VPl of the FMDV subtype from which said amino acid sequence originates at a dilution of at least about 1:100 and which antisera is neutralizing to FMDV of that subtype in a baby mouse assay at a dilution of about 1/10 that of the dilution at which it binds to said VP1.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
42 words
The peptide of claim 1 wherein said region of maximum sequence divergence extends between about amino acid 130 and amino acid 181 of VP1 of the various FMDV subtypes as aligned in accordance with the principles employed in Figures 1 and 2.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
44 words
The peptide of claim 1 or 2 wherein said region of maximum sequence divergence extends between about amino acid 133 and amino acid 160 of VPl of the various FMDV subtypes as aligned in accordance with the principles employed in Figures 1 and 2.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
The peptide of any of claims 1-3 wherein the FMDV subtypes are selected from subtypes of the FMD serotypes selected from the group consisting of O, C, A, SAT1, SAT2, SAT3 and Asian type I.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
14 words
The peptide of claim 1 comprising in substantial part the amino acid sequence Leu-Arg-Gly-Asp-Leu-Gln-Val-Leu-Ala-Gln-Lys-Val-Ala-Thr-Leu.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
26 words
A composition for treating animals to protect them for some time against FMDV infection comprising at least one peptide according to any one of claims 1-5.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
22 words
The composition of claim 6 wherein said peptide comprises amino acid sequences selected from protein VPl from two or more FMDV subtypes.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method for treating animals to protect them for some time against FMDV infection comprising treating said animals in a pharmaceutically acceptable manner with the composition of claim 6 or 7.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
38 words
The method of producing the peptide of any one of claims 1-5 characterized by the steps of culturing an appropriate host transformed with a DNA sequence coding for said peptides and isolating said peptides from said host culture.
