Abstract

Abstract A complete code format has marking elements (11,12) of two distinctive lengths which lie across a set of parallel equal height code zones (14,15,16,17,18,19). The longer (12) of the two lengths exceeds the length of the shorter (11) by twice the height of a code zone, thereby providing a substantial uniformity of separation between all members of the code set.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 146 words
1 A machine readable record (25) comprising a record base having on a surface thereof a background region of a first optical characteristic and a plurality of mark elements (11,12,24) of a second, contrasting optical characteristics, the mark elements being individually arranged in successive spaces (21) which are disposed side-by-side across the direction (32) of relative movement of the record in the machine, characterised in that the mark elements (11,12) are selected from a plurality of different predetermined lengths in their dimension transverse to the direction (32), and are positioned in selected zones of a predetermined set of equal height zones (14,15,16,17,18,19) extending parallel to the direction (32), each of the different lengths differing from the length nearest thereto by at least the height of two zones, whereby each mark element uniquely identifies by its length and location, a character of a predetermined set of characters.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 146 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
2 A record according to claim 1, in which the plurality of mark elements is preceded by a reference mark element (24) which extends parallel to the other mark elements and which indicates by its end points, the extremities of the set of zones.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
3 A record according to claim 1 or 2, in which the shortest (11) of the predetermined lengths is substantially equal to the height of one zone.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 58 words
4 A record according to claim 3, in which, for a predetermined set of ten characters (0 to 9), there are six zones in the set of zones, and only two lengths are employed to encode the set of characters, the longer (12) of the two lengths being substantially equal to three times the height of one zone.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 41 words
5 A record according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 in which each of the mark elements has a dimension parallel to the direction (32) that is less than that of the space (21) in which the mark element lies.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
6 A record according to any preceding claim, including a base lie (41,42) normal to the mark elements (11,12).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
7 A record according to claim 6, in which the base line (42) is segmented in multiples of the successive element spaces (21).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
8 A record according to any preceding claim, in the record base comprises a bank cheque.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 51 words
9 Apparatus for reading a record according to any preceding claim, comprising transport means (31) for moving the record base in the direction (32) substantially parallel to the zones, and reading means (29) positioned adjacent the record base transport path for detecting the mark elements during operation of the transport means.
