Abstract
Abstract An improved method for making hydrogenated petroleum resins by subjecting the resin to hydrogenation in the presence of a sulfided nickel (2 to 10 wt.%) - tungsten (10 to 25 wt %) catalyst supported on a gamma-alumina having fresh catalyst surface area ranging from 120 to 300 m2/g under a hydrogen pressure of 150 to 200 atmospheres and at a temperature in the range 250°C to 330°C and the resins so produced.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
84 words
1 A process for the hydrogenation of petroleum resins in which resin is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation using a hydrogenation catalyst comprising sulfided nickel-tungsten on a gamma-alumina support having a fresh catalyst surface area ranging from 120 to 300 m 2 /g and containing from 2 to 10% by weight nickel and from 10 to 25% by weight tungsten respectively wherein the hydrogenation is effected at a temperature in the range 250 to 330°C and at a hydrogen pressure of 150 to 200 atmospheres.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
30 words
2 A process according to claim 1 in which the petroleum resin is obtained by the thermal or catalytic polymerisation of a C 5/ C 9 olefine and/or diolefine stream.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
3 A process according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the petroleum resin is obtained by the catalytic polymerisation of a stream containing C 8 /C 9 aromatic olefines.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
24 words
4 A process according to any of the preceeding claims in which the resin is hydrogenated whilst dissolved in a predominantly saturated hydrocarbon solvent.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
17 words
5 A hydrogenated petroleum resin whenever produced by a process according to any of the preceding claims.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
15 words
6 The use of a hydrogenated resin according to claim 5 as an adhesive tackifier.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
13 words
7 An adhesive formulation containing a hydrogenated petroleum resin according to claim 5.
