Abstract
Abstract An animal feed additive comprises a composite of a relatively insoluble binder, a particulate soluble material and an active material. The particulate material is such that it is readily soluble under a particular range of pH conditions, e.g. under said conditions. Dissolution of the particulate material renders the binder water permeable thus permitting release of the active material.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
46 words
A device for oral administration to a ruminant animal and comprising an active material contained or incorporated in a carrier body, characterised in that said carrier body is relatively insoluble under the low acidity rumen conditions and is relatively soluble under the high acidity post-rumen conditions.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
46 words
A device for oral administration to a ruminant animal and comprising an active material contained or incorporated in a carrier body, characterised in that said carrier body is relatively insoluble under the low acidity rumen conditions and is relatively soluble under the high acidity post-rumen conditions.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
84 words
A feed additive for a ruminant animal said additive comprising a composite of a granular active material, a powdered material and a polymer, characterised in that the powdered material is such that it is substantially insoluble under the pH condition pertaining in the rumen but is soluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the post-rumen, and that the composite is such that dissolution of the powdered material significantly increases the water penetrability of the polymer thereby providing a dissolution path for the active material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
84 words
A feed additive for a ruminant animal said additive comprising a composite of a granular active material, a powdered material and a polymer, characterised in that the powdered material is such that it is substantially insoluble under the pH condition pertaining in the rumen but is soluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the post-rumen, and that the composite is such that dissolution of the powdered material significantly increases the water penetrability of the polymer thereby providing a dissolution path for the active material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
20 words
A feed additive as claimed in claim 2, characterised in that the particulate material is a water soluble glass composition.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A feed additive as claimed in claim 2 or 3 characterised in that the active material is methionine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
28 words
A feed additive as claimed in claim 2 or 3, characterised in that the active material is a liquid absorbed on to activated silica or a bentonite clay.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
35 words
A method of making a ruminant feed additive, said method including, mixing the active material with a powdered material and a polymer, and pressing, moulding, extruding or casting the mixture to form a coherent composite.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
35 words
A method of making a ruminant feed additive, said method including, mixing the active material with a powdered material and a polymer, and pressing, moulding, extruding or casting the mixture to form a coherent composite.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
88 words
A method of making a ruminant feed additive, said method including coating an active material with a composite material comprising a powdered material and a polymer, characterised in that the powdered material is such that it is substantially insoluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the rumen but is soluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the post-rumen, and that the composite material is such that dissolution of the powdered material significantly increases the water penetrability of the polymer thereby providing a dissolution path for the active material.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
88 words
A method of making a ruminant feed additive, said method including coating an active material with a composite material comprising a powdered material and a polymer, characterised in that the powdered material is such that it is substantially insoluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the rumen but is soluble under the pH conditions pertaining in the post-rumen, and that the composite material is such that dissolution of the powdered material significantly increases the water penetrability of the polymer thereby providing a dissolution path for the active material.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
27 words
A method of treating a ruminent animal, said method including administering to the animal a feed additive as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
