Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
226 words
An optical arrangement for a helmet mounted head-up display or night vision goggle comprising: an optical projector operable so as to form at a predetermined image plane a real image of optical data (F) to be displayed, and below said projector a body of light refractive material (55, 59) which serves as an eyepiece (21a, b) for viewing of the image by an observer, said body having a first external input surface (59) in generally parallel relationship with said image plane, a flat external output surface (63), a second external input surface (67) parallel to said output surface, and between said output surface and said second input surface an internal partially light transmissive, partially light reflective surface (54) whereby the observer is presented with a view of a scene forward of the observer through the eyepiece on which is superimposed a view of said image characterised in that said output surface (63) is inclined with respect to the first input surface (59) and said internal surface (54) is concavely curved towards said output surface such that light rays emanating from said image and entering said body (55, 57) at said first input surface (59) are refracted at said first input surface, totally internally reflected at said output surface, reflected at said internal surface (54) and finally transmitted through said output surface for viewing by the observer.

Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
64 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 1 wherein a marginal portion of said output surface (63) has a fully reflective coating serving to reflect to said internal surface (54) rays from said image which, after entering said body at said first input surface (59), are incident at said output surface at angles less than the critical angle for the refractive material of said body.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein said internal surface (54) is provided by a tuned optical coating.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
50 words
An optical arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 for use as a night vision goggle wherein the optical projector includes an image intensifier (33a or b) which produces at said image plane an intensified image of said scene forward of the observer viewed through the eyepiece.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
59 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 4 wherein said optical projector includes between said image intensifier (33a or b) and said scene forward of the observer an objective (39a or b) and a roof prism (35a or b) arranged to fold the optical axis of rays from the objective so that the rays are directed onto the image intensifier.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
41 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 4 or Claim 5 including means for injecting further optical data into the field of view of the observer comprising a reticle (44) positioned between the image intensifier (33b) and said first input surface (59).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
67 words
An optical arrangement according to any one of Claims 4 to 6 including means for injecting additional optical data into the field of view of the observer comprising a display device (42) providing an image of said additional optical data and an optical system (36, 38, 40) whereby a real image of said additional optical data is projected onto an input face of the image intensifier (33b).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
21 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 7 wherein said optical system comprises a relay lens (38) and a prism element (35c).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
27 words
An optical arrangement according to Claim 8 when dependent on Claim 5 wherein said prism element (35c) forms a composite prism (36) with said roof prism (35c).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
34 words
A pair of optical arrangements according to any one of Claims 4 to 9 supported by a common mounting member on a helmet (13) thereby to form a helmet mounted binocular night vision goggle.
