Abstract

Abstract Cells, particularly lymphocytes in peripheral blood or lymphatic tissues such as thymus, spleen and lymph node, are examined by measuring an electrophoretic property of cells by an automatic electrophoresis apparatus and comparing the electrophoretic property of the cells under examination with the electrophoretic property of cells of a standard. The method is useful for diagnosing cancer since the electrophoretic mobility pattern of cells taken from a tumor patient (b) is different from that of a healthy subject (a).

Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 3 or 5, wherein the increase of the fraction of thymocytes having an electrophoretic mobility higher than a predetermined value is determined.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the electrophoretic mobility of a peak in the pattern that is obtained of the electrophoretic property is measured.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 21 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the automatic electrophoretic apparatus is operated by reversing the electric field.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 27 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cells are in a medium corresponding to physiological conditions when examined by the automatic electrophoretic apparatus.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 48 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cells are in a medium at a cell concentration of 0.5 to 20 x 10 6 per ml of medium and an ionic strength of 0.11 to 0.21 when examined by the automati c electrophoretic apparatus.
