Abstract

Abstract A planetary gear arrangement for an automatic power transmission mechanism in an automotive driveline having rearward traction wheels and a forward engine wherein axial loads developed on the gearing due to thrust forces resulting from displacement of the rear vehicle suspension while the vehicle is accelerating or when it is operated over a rough road bed are transmitted directly to the case (46) as the torque transmitting elements of the gearing are isolated from these thrust forces, and wherein provision is made for preloading (19) thrust bearing (124 ' 132) in the gearing to accommodate axial displacement of the torque output shaft (18) with respect to the other torque transmission elements of the gearing when the suspension is deflected and the geometry of the driveshaft and suspension system changes while the vehicle is operating under torque.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 167 words
In a planetary transmission for an automotive vehicle having aligned input and output shafts, a transmission case, said shafts being journalled within said case; planetary gearing within said case adapted to provide plural torque delivery paths between said input shaft and said output shaft; said output shaft having a splined connection with a torque output element of said planetary gearing; characterized in that t a first thrust reaction bearing assembly (124) formed on said output shaft (18) adjacent a reaction wall (130) on said casing (16) whereby inbound thrust forces on said output shaft (18) are transmitted directly to said casing (16); a second thrust reaction bearing assembly (132) on said output shaft (18) situated adjacent another reaction wall on said case (46) whereby outbound thrust forces on said output shaft are transmitted directly to said case (46); and spring means (138) for cushioning the transfer of outbound thrust forces from said output shaft (18) to said case (46) through said second thrust reaction bearing assembly (132).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 167 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 132 words
A planetary transmission as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said gearing comprises a first simple planetary gear unit (12) and a second simple planetary gear unit.(14); each gear unit comprising a ring gear (20 resp 40), a sun gear (22 resp 38), planet pinions (25 resp 36) engaged with their respective center ring gears and a carrier (26 resp 30/32) journalling the pinions of each gear unit; a sun gear shaft (94) splined to the sun gear (38) of one of said gear units and arranged in alignment with the common axis of said input shaft (102) and said output shaft (18) and a spline connection (28) between the carrier (30/32) of said one gear unit (14) with a torque delivery element (26) of the other gear unit (12).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 109 words
The combination as set forth in claim 1 to 2, characterized in that t said carriers (26 and 30/32) are connected together; a thrust plate extending in a radial direction and carried by the ring gear (20) of said second gear unit (12); a second thrust plate (112) extending in a radial direction adjacent said first clutch plate (92) and splined to the carrier (26) of said second gear unit (12) whereby thrust forces can be transferred therethrough and whereby the gear elements of said gear units are contained in a unitary assembly as said radially disposed thrust plates (108/112) prevent axial displacements of the elements of the gearing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 146 words
The combination as set forth in claim 1 to 3, characterized in that t said first thrust reaction bearing assembly (124) on said output shaft (18) comprises a thrust ring (126) secured to said output shaft (18) against displacement in an outbound direction; a radial needle thrust bearing (128) located between said thrust ring (126) and said first reaction wall (130) on said case (46); the second thrust reaction bearing assembly (132) on said output shaft (18) comprising a second thrust ring (134) and another radial needle thrust bearing (136) located between said second thrust ring (134) and said second reaction wall of said case (46); and yieldable spring means (138) for establishing a yieldable connection between said output shaft (18) and said second thrust reaction bearing aseembly (132) whereby thrust forces in an outbound direction are transferred through said spring means to said case (46).
