Abstract
Abstract A submarine cable joint 1 comprises an elongated coupling element 8 each end of which is connected to the annular tensile layer 28 of cables 2, 3 to be joined. Fibre tails 4, 5 from the cables are led out of the coupling element and wound round bobbin 20 for splicing.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim
82 words
A joint for cables, each having at least one optical fibre surrounded by an annular tensile layer, such joint comprising a coupling member, means for connecting the coupling member to the annular tensile layers of the cables to be joined, the coupling element being so constructed as to allow the fibre tails of the cables to emerge and be led to an accessible joining position outside the coupling member, and an external housing for the coupling member and the joined fibre tails.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
46 words
A joint as claimed in Claim 1 wherein end compartments of The coupling member receive the fibre tails and openings are provided in the coupling to allow the fibre tails to emerge without bending beyond a predetermined bend radius and be led to a joining location.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
A joint as claimed in either Claim 1 or Claim 2 comprising means for storing joined fibre tails within the housing without bending the said tails beyond a minimum bend radius.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
19 words
A joint as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the storing means comprises a bobbin member surrounding said coupling member.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
A joint as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein preformed ducts lead the fibre tails to the joining position.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
40 words
A joint as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein, at each end of an elongate coupling -member an annular rim is secured by a surrounding connecting member to a ferrule surrounding and fixed to a cable end part.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
33 words
A joint as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the ferrule is swaged onto a support tube surrounding the optical fibres, the annular tensile layer being clamped between the ferrule and the support tube.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
28 words
A joint as claimed in Claim 6 or Claim 7 wherein the surrounding connecting members at each end of the coupling member provide end walls of the casing.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
29 words
A joint as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein, in each cable, an electrically conductive metal tube is positioned intermediate the fibre(s) and the annular tensile layer.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
37 words
A joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein each cable has an axially positioned king wire and the king wires extend to a joint in an axially extending passage within the coupling member.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
24 words
A joint as claimed in Claim 10, wherein a water blocking agent is injected into the passage after reception of the joined king wires.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
19 words
A joint as claimed in either Claim 10 or Claim 11 wherein the joint is encapsulated in insulating material.
Claim 14
Independent Claim
71 words
A method of joining two cables, each including an annular tensile layer surrounding at least one optical fibre, such method comprising the steps of connecting the annular tensile layers to opposed positions on a coupling member, leading a fibre tail from each cable to an accessible position outside of the coupling member and thereafter joining the fibre tails and fitting a housing around the joined fibre tails and the coupling member.
Claim 15
Independent Claim
71 words
A method of joining two cables, each including an annular tensile layer surrounding at least one optical fibre, such method comprising the steps of connecting the annular tensile layers to opposed positions on a coupling member, leading a fibre tail from each cable to an accessible position outside of the coupling member and thereafter joining the fibre tails and fitting a housing around the joined fibre tails and the coupling member.
