Abstract

Abstract In an apparatus for the ultra or hyperfiitration of liquids. to form a permeate fraction and a concentrate fraction and comprising a stack of membranes and membrane support ptates, said stack comprising two longitudinally extending main flow passages connected with a plurality of flow passages extending along the surfaces of the membranes there is provided (a) means for blocking the flow of liquid from one main flow passage to the other in a zone around the centre line between said two main flow passages or (b) ribs having a height which increases when viewed in a direction from the central part towards the periphery of a membrane support plate with the object of obtaining an improved distribution of liquid over the membrane surfaces.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 161 words
An apparatus for the separation of a liquid into at least one permeate fraction and at least one concentrate fraction by filtration through semi-permeable membranes, said apparatus comprising a stack of semi-permeable membranes and elongated membrane support plates arranged so as to form flow passages extending along the surfaces of the membranes, each membrane support plate comprising at least two spaced holes extending therethrough so as to form two main flow passages extending longitudinally of said stack, means for supplying liquid to be fractionated to one of said main flow passages, means for discharging a permeate fraction and means for discharging a concentrate fraction from said stack, characterized in that the membrane support plates have such a surface configuration that the flow of liquid along the membrane surfaces is blocked in a zone located around the centre line between the main flow passages and that each membrane comprises a hole having a shape corresponding to the contour of the blocked zone.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 43 words
An apparatus as in claim 1, characterized in that said blocked zone comprises a central hole in each membrane support plate, said hole being surrounded by both sides of the membrane support plate of a rim preventing liquid from flowing into said hole.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
An apparatus as in claim 1, characterized in that the membrane support plates have a super-elliptical contour.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
An apparatus as in claim 3, characterized in that the membranes have a super-elliptical contour.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 30 words
An apparatus as in claim 2, characterized in that each membrane support plate comprise ducts connecting the top and bottom surfaces of said membrane support plate with said central hole.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 32 words
An apparatus as in claim 2, characterized in that one of the main flow passages is connected to a central flow passage formed by the central holes in the membrane support plates.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 139 words
An apparatus for the separation of a liquid into at least one permeate fraction and at least one concentrate fraction by filtration through semi-permeable membranes, said apparatus comprising a stack of semi-permeable membranes and elongated membrane support plates having ribs projecting from the surfaces of said plates and forming a plurality of separate flow passages extending along the membrane surfaces, each membrane support plate comprising at least two spaced holes extending therethrough so as to form two main flow passages extending longitudinally of said stack, means for supplying liquid to be fractionated to one of said main flow passages, means for discharging a permeate fraction and means for discharging a concentrate fraction from said stack, characterized in that the heights of the ribs on each membrane support plate increase with increasing distances from the central part of said plate.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 31 words
An apparatus as in claim 1, characterized in that the thickness of each membrane support plate per se increases when viewed in a direction from its periphery towards its central part.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 57 words
An apparatus as in claim 1 or claim 7, characterized in that the membranes are pressed against the membrane support plates in annular zones adjacent to the holes in said membrane support plates by sealing means comprising two annular members which are interconnected by pins provided on one member and inserted into holes in the other member.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 37 words
An apparatus as in claim 9, characterized in that holes for the insertion of the pins provided on the annular sealing members are provided in the zones of the membrane support plates adjacent to the holes therein.
