Abstract
Abstract A starting pitch for carbon fibers, produced by heat treating at 400-500°C under a hydrogen pressure of at least 20 Kg/cm 2 .G (1) a heavy fraction oil boiling at not lower than 200°C obtained at the time of fluidized catalytic cracking of petroleum or (3) a mixture of the heavy fraction oil (1) with (2) a heavy fraction oil boiling at not lower than 200°C obtained at the time of steam cracking of petroleum, the pitch so produced being heat treated to make precursor pitch therein, melt spun, infusibilized and carbonized or further graphitized to obtain the carbon fibers.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim
108 words
A starting pitch for carbon fibers, produced by heat treating at 400-500°C under a hydrogen pressure of at least 20 Kg/cm 2 .G an oil selected from the group consisting of (1) a heavy fraction oil boiling at not lower than 200°C obtained at the time of fluidized catalytic cracking of petroleum and (3) a mixture of the heavy fraction oil (1) with (2) a heavy fraction oil boiling at not lower than 200°C obtained at the time of steam cracking of petroleum, the pitch so produced being heat treated to make precursor pitch thereof, melt spun, infusibilized and carbonized or further graphitized to obtain the carbon fibers.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
31 words
A pitch for carbon fibers according to claim 1, wherein the mixture (3) consists of the heavy fraction oils (2) and (1) in a ratio by weight of 1 : 0.1-9.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
25 words
A pitch for carbon fibers according to claim ` 1 or 2, wherein the heavy fraction oils (1) and (2) are each boiling at 200-450°C.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
37 words
A pitch for carbon fibers according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the petroleum used in the catalytic or steam cracking is naphtha, gas oil, kerosene or a bottom oil obtained by distillation at atmospheric pressure.
