Abstract

Abstract non-aqueous ink jet composition comprises 20 to 80 wt% oleic acid, and a dye and has a surface tension greater than 35 dynes/cm. Preferably a dye solvent is also employed, for example N-methyl pyrrolidone, benzyl alcohol or benzyl ether. The preferred dye is Typophor Black. In use, the composition is jetted at a temperature in the range 52 to 63°C. Average dot circularity of at least 0.7 is obtainable.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 64 words
A substantially non-aqueous ink composition for an ink jet system, which composition includes oleic acid and a dye; characterised in that the composition contains from 20 to 80 wt% of oleic acid and has a surface tension greater than 35 dynes/cm, said ink composition providing on a plurality of printing paper grades a print quality with an average dot circularity of at least 0.7.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 64 words
A substantially non-aqueous ink composition for an ink jet system, which composition includes oleic acid and a dye; characterised in that the composition contains from 20 to 80 wt% of oleic acid and has a surface tension greater than 35 dynes/cm, said ink composition providing on a plurality of printing paper grades a print quality with an average dot circularity of at least 0.7.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
An ink jet composition as claimed in Claim 1, characterised by further containing a solvent for the dye.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
An ink jet composition as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the dye solvent is at least one of: an aromatic alcohol, an aromatic ether, dimethyl sulfoxide, an alkyl pyrrolidone, methoxy-and ethoxy- triglycol.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
An ink jet composition as claimed in Claim 3, wherein said solvent comprises one or more of N- methyl pyrrolidone, benzyl alcohol and benzyl ether.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
An ink jet composition as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the dye is at least one of: typophor black, calco chinoline yellow, and calco oil yellow.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
An ink jet composition as claimed in claim 2, comprising: oleic acid 34%; N-methyl pyrrolidone 60%; and Nigrosine Black 6% by weight.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 43 words
A ink jet composition as claimed in any preceding claim, having a viscosity in the range of from 5 to 20 centipoises at a temperature of 57°C (135°F), and preferably from 10 to 40 centipoises at a temperature of 24 0 C (76°F).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 42 words
' A method of ink jet printing, characterised by employing the ink jet composition defined in any precedig claim and by jetting the composition at a temperature of from 52°C (125°F) to 63°C (145°F), preferably 57°C (135°F), towards a printing paper medium.
