Abstract

Abstract Data-processing apparatus is connected to a peripheral system by a plurality of channel paths. These channel paths are named as members of path groups. Each path group has one or more channel paths. Within each path group, communications between the data-processing system and the peripheral system are multipathed among the paths in such path groups. Devices within the peripheral system are selectively assignable to access groups for exclusive use within one or more of such path groups. A given path group selectively provides communication paths for each device in an access group. Each access group includes one or more path groups. Temporary suspension and reassignment facilities are disclosed. Both devices and channel paths can be either in a grouped or ungrouped state. The assignment function to access groups is particularly useful in interleaved channel transfers for ensuring subsystem integrity.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
1 Data processing apparatus including a plurality of host processors (12) connected by a peripheral system control unit (11) to a plurality of peripheral devices (13) characterised by first means (23, 331) responsive to a first peripheral command from a host processor for establishing path group allocations for enabling multipath connections of devices to a host processor, and second means (24,332) responsive to a second peripheral command for establishing simultaneously existing dynamic plural access groups of permitted allegiances of peripheral devices to hosts via one or more of the path groups, the first and second means being connected to limit the device multipath connections established by the first means in accordance with the access groups established by the second means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 120 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 62 words
2 Apparatus according to Claim 1, including override control means (333) for establishing for one predetermined set of peripheral operations to be performed by one peripheral device via but one of the paths in a path group usually enabling multipath connections, the set of peripheral operations occurring in a limited time indicated by one of the host processors to the control unit.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 74 words
3 Apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, including memory means in the control unit, the second means having means for recording electrical indications of the access groups in the memory means, means to enable the first means to access the memory means before establishing a multipath allegiance for a given device, and to signal an error to a host processor if the electrical indication indicates no access group corresponding to a multipath allegiance.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 49 words
4 Apparatus according to claim 1, 2 or 3, including means in the first means responsive to an attempted access by a host processor of a device via a path not in a current path group for the device to send a busy signal to the requesting host processor.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
5' Apparatus according to any preceding claim, in which a first peripheral command activates the first means to alter the multipath allegiance, and means in the second means responsive to alteration of a multipath allegiance to alter a corresponding one of the access groups.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 46 words
6 Apparatus according to Claim 1, including access control limiting means for limiting connections in a given path group for a given device to be a predetermined portion of paths in said path group for a predetermined set of peripheral operations and then removing the limitation.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
7 Apparatus according to Claim 1, including access control security means responsive to a second peripheral command to establish a password for received peripheral commands to be met before enabling operation.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 116 words
8 Apparatus according to Claim 1 including a status store having a random access memory having a plurality of addressable registers for storing signals indicating access gorups and signals indicating path groups, a control store having a path group map portion including means for storing a path map and a password each of said path groups, a path group table portion for each path storing path group identification and indication of said path group, each of said path group map portions having a storage for a stored access group map, and means in the control unit responsive to peripheral commands for altering the memory and store in accordance therewith and coupling assign and unassign means thereto.
