Abstract

The invention relates to a display with a light guide on the front and a light source arranged on the side. It is proposed to design the light-generating and distributing part of the display device as follows: the light guide has a wedge shape in its section covering the optically effective display layer, i.e. the back of the wedge lies in the display plane, while the front of the wedge is slightly inclined towards the display plane. The wedge section has no optical contact with the other display parts, it receives the artificial light through its base surface; the arrangement is such that the light received by the base surface, which first strikes the inclined wedge surface, experiences at least one total reflection. The opening angles for the wedge section are usually between 4 ° and 12 °. In a preferred embodiment, the light guide is extended beyond the base surface of the wedge section, bent backwards and mirrored in its bent area and provided with an embedded light source. If the display has two outer polarizers, it is advisable to place the light guide between the front linear polarizer and the front carrier plate. Hauptanwendungsgebiet: Flüssigkristallanzeigen, insbesondere sogenannte "Drehzellen". Main area of application: liquid crystal displays, in particular so-called "rotary cells".
