Abstract

Abstract This transport system contains an air film shuttle conveyor (10) for conveying semiconductor chips (26) from a loading (20) to an unloading station (30), the conveyor comprising a base plate (42) and upstanding side walls (48) extending longitudinally of the base plate, the side walls being spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the lateral dimension of said chips; further included are means providing a laminar air flow which surrounds the chips and forms an air film supporting them and propelling them downstream such that the slight spacing between the chips and the side walls causes the flow resistance to be higher in the one regions defined by said slight spacing than in the region defined by the spacing between the chips, whereby a continuous and flexible separation action occurs between the chips.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 236 words
A transport system for transporting semiconductor chips comprising: (a) a loading or input station (20) at which a plurality of semiconductor chips (26) is assembled; (b) an unloading or output station (30) at which a plurality of said chips is mounted on ceramic substrates (34) for eventual interconnection to external circuitry; (c) first vacuum pick-up means (28) for picking up said chips from the loading station and transferring them to the upstream end of a conveyor (10) ; (d) second vacuum pick-up means (32) for picking up said chips at the downstream end of said conveyor and transferring them to said unloading station; (e) an air film shuttle conveyor (10) for conveying said chips from said loading (20) to said unloading station (30), said conveyor comprising a base plate (42) and upstanding said side walls (48) extending longitudinally of said base plate, said side walls being spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the lateral dimension of said chips; characterized by means providing a motion controlling laminar air flow which surrounds said chips and forms a an air film supporting said chips and propelling them downstream such that the slight spacing between the chips and the side walls causes the flow resistance to be higher in the one region defined by said slight spacing than in the region defined by the spacing between said chips, whereby a continous and flexible separation action occurs between said chips.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 236 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
A transport system in accordance with claim 1, characterized by transporting prismatic semiconductor chips having a spaced distribution of a plurality of hemispheric solder mounds (53) within an area on a surface facing said air film.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
A transport system in accordance with claims 1 and 2, characterized in that said slight spacing between the chips (26) and the side walls (48) is of the order of 0,25 mm the spacing between chips being of the order of 1,8 mm, and the volumetric flow rate of air per foot of conveyor (10) being in the range of 15 to 300 cm 3 per second.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
A transport system in accordance with claims 1 and 2, characterized in that said means for providing laminar air flow includes two rows of jets (38) parallel and adjacent to the side walls (48), said rows being directed inwardly with respect to each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
A transport system in accordance with claim 4, characterized in that said rows of jets (38) are also directed forwardly with respect to the desired longitudinal movement for the chips (26).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 57 words
A transport system in accordance with claim 4, characterized in, that said jets (38) are defined by ports extending through said base plate (42) to a pressurized plenum, with said ports having a length to equivalent diameter ratio greater than 0,058 R e where R e is the Reynolds number of the air flow through said port.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 43 words
A transport system in accordance with claim 4, characterized in, that said rows of jets (38) are directed inwardly such that the angle of said jets to the longitudinal axis of said side walls (48) is in the range of 40 to 60°.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A transport system in accordance with claim 5, characterized in, that said rows of jets (38) are directed forwardly by being at an angle to the vertical in the range of 40 to 60°.
