Abstract

Abstract An electric motor powered actuator 26 in which a shaft 110 has a threaded connection with the rotor 60 of an electric motor whereby rotation of the rotor causes axial translation of the shaft. The shaft is urged in one direction by a compression spring 116 and the compression spring is interposed between the shaft and a spacer ring 94 that engages one of the thrust bearings 74 for the motor rotor. The compression spring has nonrotatable connections 118, 122 with the shaft 110 and motor housing 28 such that the torsional force of the spring prevents rotation of the shaft 110 relative to the motor housing 28 when the motor rotor is rotated.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 179 words
.1. An electric motor operated actuator (26) comprising; a motor housing (28) having an end wall (52), a shaft (110) extending through said end wall, an electric motor comprising a stator (34) and a rotor (60) supported by said housing, first (74) and second (72) thrust bearings engaging, respectively, opposite ends of said rotor, and means (114,115) providing a threaded connection between said rotor and shaft whereby rotary movement of said rotor causes axial movement of said shaft, characterised in that the actuator includes a spacer (94,124) having a wall portion (123) located at the exterior of said motor housing end wall (52) and having portions (92) extending through openings (96) formed in said end wall and engaging said first thrust bearing (74), and resilient means (116) interposed between said shaft (110) and said wall portion (123) of said spacer (94,124) operative to urge said shaft in a direction away from said spacer to thereby aid the motor in moving the shaft in that direction and effective to take up any end play in said first thrust bearing (74).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 39 words
An electric motor operated actuator according to claim 1, characterised in that the spacer (94,124) is slidably supported by the motor housing (28) and is biased into contact with the first thrust bearing (74) by said resilient means (116).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
An electric motor operated actuator according to claim 1, characterised in that the spacer (92) is prevented from axial movement relative to the motor housing (28) by retainer means (140) fixed to the motor housing.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 75 words
An electric motor operated actuator according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the shaft (110) has an abutment (22A) and the resilient means (116) is interposed between the spacer (124) and the shaft abutment (22A), the axial length of the spacer (124) being such that the shaft abutment (22A) engages the end (128) of the spacer prior to engaging the motor housing (28) when the shaft abutment is moved toward the motor housing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
An electric motor operated actuator according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the resilient means comprises a coil spring (116) disposed about the shaft (110), the coil spring having-axially spaced portions (118,122) that are non-rotatably connected, respectively, to the shaft (110) and the motor housing (28) to thereby prevent, .by the torsional force exerted by the spring, relative rotation occurring between the shaft (110) and the motor . housing 28.
