Abstract

Abstract The optoelectronic switch includes a photosensitive GaAs FET (1) on to which an optical signal (11) may be directed. The optical signal (11) is derived from an RF modulated light source (12). A voltage circuit (7) is connected to the FET (1) to switch the FET (1) "on" or "off" by placing a positive or zero voltage respectively on the drain. An isolation of over 70 dB is obtained in this FET switch,

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 36 words
An electronic analogue switch comprising a field effect transistor, an input terminal for applying an analogue signal to the transistor, and means for controlling the potential difference between the drain and source electrodes of the transistor.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 36 words
An electronic analogue switch comprising a field effect transistor, an input terminal for applying an analogue signal to the transistor, and means for controlling the potential difference between the drain and source electrodes of the transistor.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A switch as claimed in claim 1 in which the input terminal is connected to the gate of the field effect transistor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A switch as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the transistor is a junction field effect transistor.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 36 words
A switch as claimed in claim 1 in which the transistor is light responsive, and in which the input terminal is connected to means for directing an optical signal on to the channel of the transistor.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 54 words
A switch as claimed in claim 4 in which the means applies a voltage source at one of two predetermined levels between the source and drain of the transistor, the lower voltage level rendering the transistor non-responsive to the optical signal and the higher voltage level rendering the transistor responsive to the optical signalo
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
A switch as claimed in claim 4 or 5 in which the transistor is a GaAs field effect transistor.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 34 words
A switch as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the means includes a voltage source connected to the transistor and a semi-conductor switch connected across the voltage source to ground.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
A switch as claimed in any one of claims 1-6 in which the means includes a semi-conductor switch and a voltage source connected in series with the transistor.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 37 words
An optoelectronic switch comprising a photoconductive detector, means for directing an optical signal on to the photoconductive detector, and voltage means connected to the photoconductive detector for rendering the latter responsive or non-responsive to the optical signal.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 37 words
An optoelectronic switch comprising a photoconductive detector, means for directing an optical signal on to the photoconductive detector, and voltage means connected to the photoconductive detector for rendering the latter responsive or non-responsive to the optical signal.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 74 words
A switch as claimed in claim 9 in which the photoconductive detector consists of a photosensitive field effect transistor having a source and a drain, and the voltage means is such that it applies a bias voltage at one of two different levels between the source and the drain, the lower voltage level rendering the transistor non-responsive to the optical signal and the higher voltage level rendering the transistor responsive to the optical signal.
