Abstract
Abstract Apparatus for aiding the separation of the components of a liquid dispersion comprises at least one pair of electrodes, arranged so as to be able to apply a unidirectional, varying electric field across at least a portion of a flow path 5a of the dispersion, at least one of the or each pair of electrodes being separated from the dispersion by a layer of electrically insulating material.A method for aiding the separation of the components of a liquid dispersion is also described.

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
79 words
Apparatus for aiding the separation of the components of a liquid dispersion, the apparatus comprising means for passing said dispersion along a flow path and at least one pair.of electrodes for causing an electrostatic field across at least a portion of the flow path, characterised in that the electrostatic field is unidirectional and varying, and at least one of the of each pair of electrodes being, in use, separated from the dispersion by a layer of electrically insulating material.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
29 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 characterised in that the dispersion is one of at Yeast one electrically conducting liquid in one or more liquids of relatively lower electrical conductivity.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
31 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2 characterised in that the varying electrostatic field is caused by the application of a varying voltage across the or each pair of electrodes.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
23 words
Apparatus according to:claim 3 characterised in that the voltage is pulsed between zero and an appropriately high voltage at a predetermined constant frequency.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
Apparatus according to claim 3 or claim 4 characterised in that the voltage is varied at a frequency between 1 HZ and 30 HZ.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
59 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims characterised in that the or one of the electrodes in the or each pair of electrodes which is separated from the dispersion by a layer of electrically insulating material has, in use, a higher voltage applied to it than is applied to the other of the or each pair of electrodes.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims characterised in that the maximum field strength across the flow path is below 1100 V/cm.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
40 words
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims characterised in that there is further provided a settling tank in which the components of the dispersion may be allowed to settle into discrete phases after passing through the said electrostatic field.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
37 words
Apparatus according to any of claims 2 to 8 in that the dispersion is one in which the volume of electrically conducting liquid as a percentage of the total volume of the dispersion is above approximately 40%.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
73 words
A method for aiding the separation of the components of a liquid dispersion, the method comprising passing said dispersion along a flow path and applying across at least a portion of the flow path an electrostatic field, characterised in that the electrostatic field is unidirectionally and varyingly applied, and at least one of the or each pair of electrodes is, in use, separated from the dispersion by a layer of electrically insulating material.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
73 words
A method for aiding the separation of the components of a liquid dispersion, the method comprising passing said dispersion along a flow path and applying across at least a portion of the flow path an electrostatic field, characterised in that the electrostatic field is unidirectionally and varyingly applied, and at least one of the or each pair of electrodes is, in use, separated from the dispersion by a layer of electrically insulating material.
